Course Description
An introduction to the classical-music tradition of Western music from the middle ages to the twentieth century. As a Global Perspectives course, an emphasis on both cultural perspectives, similarities and contrasts between Western music's functions, sound and cultural values in various eras, as well as among global societies, is a primary goal of the course. The course is intended primarily for non-music majors and is a requirement for those students who choose to minor in music. Its overarching goal is to provide educational background to enable each student toward a greater understanding of music, and to increase one's enjoyment and perception of music.
The overall organization of the course is in five topical units:
Unit 1: Fundamentals and Elements of Music (August 24 - September 4)
Unit 2: Music, Worship and Spirituality (September 7 - September 21)
Unit 3: Music for the Stage and Screen (September 23 - October 12)
Unit 4: Music for Small Spaces and Friends (October 14 - November 4)
Unit 5: Music in Public Spaces (November 6 - November 20)
