Getting Started:

A. Familiarize yourself with the Classroom Moodle site. Be certain you can locate the course syllabus, calendar, the course modules, and be certain you know how to access the reading materials, multi-media sources, and that you know what supplies you will need for the class. 

B. You will receive an email to your BSC account prompting you to register and create a user name and password to access ATLAS (Accomplished Teaching Learning and Schools). We will use this video library of accomplished teachers teaching a variety of lessons throughout the course. If you have any trouble creating an account, etc. email me immediately. 

C. Introduce yourself to the class by creating a Flipgrid video. Use this link and your @bsc.edu account to create a free account.

This module will provide information about why creativity is important, and how K-6 classroom teachers can use the arts (music/movement, drama, visual arts, and media arts/technology) to support the learning of their students across the content areas (English language arts, math, science, social studies, and health).

• generate a personal statement of why creativity is important 
  
• consider your personal feelings about yourself as a creative individual

You will use the information from these sources to complete the following assignments. 

Assignments:

1. Test Your Creativity

How creative are you? Use the provided Test Your Creativity template to turn the random squiggles into a picture. Focus on creating a one-of-a-kind idea for the line/squiggle. Print the template, let your creativity flow, take a picture of your finished work and upload the picture in the assignment link. Due June 12th by 11:59 PM/25 pts. 

2. The Important Thing About Creativity Is...

Margaret Wise Brown wrote a children's book titled, The Important Book. This text is a mentor-text that teachers often use with students to produce a focused, but creative, piece of writing about a specific topic. You will be using this text to create your personal statement of why creativity is important and will share it with your classmates via a flipgrid video (https://flipgrid.com/c3377443) is the flipgrid code-it's also posted in the assignment directions). Specific directions for the assignment and a grading rubric are provided below. 

3. Summary of connections between readings and videos.

Reflect on what you have read and viewed. Consider this in terms of your own thinking about yourself as a creative person and the experiences you've had throughout your life that have fostered or stifled your creativity. Specific directions for the assignment and a grading rubric are provided below. 

Module #2 Media Arts and Maker’s Spaces

This module will provide resources to support your learning and thinking about the role of media arts (technology) and Maker’s Spaces to support the learning of all students. This module is also the time you will complete the project designated as the Creative Expressions project by writing an original poem and creating a multi-media project to present the poem.

After you have engaged with the course readings, multi-media resources, classmates, and me, you will be able to

·       Write an original poem using George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From” as a mentor text and model and create a multi-media presentation of the poem to communicate effectively in a creative form

·       Create a Marble-run using specific criteria

·     Summarize the role of technology and maker’s spaces in classrooms

Creative Arts in Teaching is a designated Creative Expressions Course. 

As identified by Birmingham-Southern College the Creative Expression (CE) Learning Outcomes are that students will be able to:

• Identify an appropriate process, form, or technique for expressing a creative idea

• Create or perform a creative piece appropriate to the discipline

• Revise, refine, and finalize own creative work on the basis of established criteria of the discipline, process, form, or technique

• Contribute to group critiques and discussions about the creative work of self and others

This CE project will be assessed using Birmingham-Southern College’s Creative Expression Assessment Rubric.

Module III-Visual Arts June 21st-July 2nd/11 Days

In this module you will engage with a variety of readings and media presentations to explore the way K-6 Classroom and Special Education teachers can use the visual arts to help students show what they know about their learning of the academic curriculum. You will create a portfolio of your work and then create a flipgrid video to share your work. At the end of this module you will be able to

·        Define visual arts and identify and explain the different components that comprise this category of the arts

·        Identify two integrated arts lessons and explain how each lesson can support the understanding of an Alabama Course of Study standard for a specific grade and content area

·        Explain, using specific examples, the implications of Howard Gardiner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, and how using a variety of visual arts can be a better way for students to show their understanding of what they are learning than a traditional paper/pencil task

·        Create a portfolio of your own visual arts work and describe the process you used for creation, production, responding and connecting with your art work.

The following assignments will be completed during this module. 

 1. Watercolor Techniques and Watercolor Self-Choice-Watch the video “Four Watercolor Techniques”.  Use the model provided in the video to create your picture using the same 4 techniques modeled in the video. Then, use the provided links and choose one of the two lessons (Tulips or Notre Dame) to complete and add to your portfolio.

2.  Use the resources below and choose 2 arts-integrated lessons to complete and submit as part of your Flipgrid portfolio.

This module will provide resources to support your learning understanding of the role of music and movement in K-6 classrooms. For our purposes, we will consider this information from the lens of a classroom teacher rather than from the lens of a music or physical education teacher. Some of the videos you will view are being taught be music teachers. You should focus on how the work they are doing with students could be used by a general or special education teacher with grades K-6. 

The resources provided for this module include a chapter from the course text, several articles, and several youtube videos. While much of the information is divided between music or movement, remember that these two domains will very often overlap! For music, we will focus specifically on using music as a way to create smooth transitions within the classroom, music to teach, and music created by students to demonstrate their learning. For movement, we will focus specifically on how movement built into the day as brain breaks can be used to foster positive academic development as well as supporting a student's social-emotional and physical well-being.

After you have engaged with the course readings, and multi-media resources, you will be able to

In this module, you will engage with readings and media to explore the way K-6 Classroom and Special Educators can use drama to help students more fully understand the material taught and to show what they know about their learning of the academic curriculum. You will learn about how tenets of drama can be used with elementary-aged children and you will learn about Reader’s Theater as an instructional strategy and an assessment to support student learning.
