Beethoven's Symphonies
An E-Term course exploring the nine symphonies composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), one of the most significant musicians in the history of Western classical music. As non-music majors, we will look at Beethoven, his world, and the symphonies from the standpoint of history, culture and esthetics to see the connections between the Symphony as a musical genre, the changing view of composers from "craftspeople" to "artists," and in context of historical events as the ideals of the Enlightenment were transformed by political and social revolution, changes in technology and economics, and the increasing importance of the middle-classes as consumers of art. We will also learn about the construction of the symphonies, what made each of them significant, and learn to appreciate and recognize the music itself, as well as the world in which it was created.
