Homework #1: Due Wednesday, January 5, at the beginning of class.

1. Use the Excel worksheet and a tape measure to estimate your body fat in the three different ways presented.

3. Listen to the first episode of the the podcast One Real Good Thing, by Ellie Krieger. The episode is called, "Reframe Food as Usually, Sometimes, or Rarely."

1. Find your resting heart rate either with a heart rate monitor or by checking your pulse immediately after waking up and before getting out of bed.
2. Read the following in The Smarter Way:

• No, You Can't Create "Long, Lean Muscles," p. 71.

Homework #8: Before coming to class on Friday, read pages 144 (starting at "Planning For Workouts: Periodization" to 153 (ending at "Making Decisions From Values").

Presentation/Paper Assignment: Due in class Thursday, January 27.

1. With a partner, select an issue of the Nutrition Action Health Letter that contains at least one article that interests each of you.
2. Email me your issue selection as soon as you make it so we don't have pairs doing the same issue. Issues will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. If you pick an issue that's already been taken, I'll let you know that you need to make another choice.
3. Create a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation on the issue you've selected.

   • The presentation should cover nearly the entire issue, not just a particular article. You'll need to use some judgement as to what to include in the presentation and what to leave out based on your opinion of what's most interesting and subject to time constraints.
   • The presentation should have an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction should include why you chose the issue, i.e. what was interesting to you about it. The conclusion should state your most important takeaways from the issue.
   • The body of the presentation should be divided into sections, one for each topic/article you cover, and each section should summarize the topic including why it's important, any claims made, and the evidence for or against those claims. Each person should speak for roughly half the time.

      

4. Write an 8-10 page paper on your issue. The paper will cover the same basic information as the presentation, but you should be sure to include more detail about your reactions to the articles. What surprised you? What struck you as particularly interesting and why? Was anything contrary to your previous beliefs?
