Participación en clase y preparación

(75 points or 7.5% / 3 points per class meeting approximately)

All students are expected to be full participants in all daily classroom activities that include debates, role-play, individual, pair and group work, reading and writing assignments. Regular attendance and participation in class activities are essential to be a successful language learner. In order for students to progress in understanding and speaking Spanish, they must hear and speak it on a daily basis. Therefore, students must prepare carefully for class by completing all assignments in advance and be ready to participate actively in class. Every class, students will be graded on individual, pair, and group activities. The dates for all exams and assignments are clearly marked on your syllabus under "Programa" (last page). It is crucial that students complete all of their reading assignments by the due date indicated on the Programa, prior to class. These assignments will become the “focus” of discussions during class.

Class participation, preparation and attendance are CRUCIAL for succeeding in the course.  They will be graded, among other things, on the following factors:

·         Completion of homework assignments by the due date: conducting readings, writing essays, completing a variety of textbook exercises including the usage of Blackboard and Wimba

·         Constant use of Spanish in the classroom

·         Volunteering to answer and ask questions

·         Positive contributions to the class

·         Regular use of new vocabulary

·         Grammatically and phonetically correct answers

·         Progress in the “skill of communication”

·         Attendance

·         Alertness

Worksheets de lectura (50 points 0r 5% / 10 x 5 points)

Students will complete a worksheet for one selected reading -other than the one chose for Ejercicio del texto- within each of the six chapters. The worksheet will be available on Blackboard. Each worksheet will count for 15 points based on completion and quality of the work. Worksheets de lectura are due on the date indicated on the Programa (see ps. 6, 7).

Cuaderno de gramática española (40 points or 4% / 40 x 1 point)

All selected exercises from Cuadernos have to be completed by the date indicated in the Programa (at the end of the syllabus). Students need to complete the exercises class-by-class and are encouraged to identify problems within specific exercises and bring questions to class for further revision. The Cuaderno de gramática española must be brought to class always together with the textbook.

Temas (150 points or 15% for 3 essays / 50 points each)

Students are required to write four essays during the term, one per every chapter (6). The topics and guidelines for this assignment are included within the section called “Temas de ensayo” located at the end of each chapter text. The professor will assign a grade (out of 50 points) to each essay. Essays are due on the date indicated on the Programa (see ps. 6, 7).

Temas must be:

·         typed

·         double-spaced

·         in Spanish

·         minimum two pages of text (with 12-point font)

A Corrections Key explaining the Professor’s notations on the essay as well as an Essay Rubrics will be posted on the Blackboard site for the class. Getting any outside help (other than from Dr. Ramos) on the essays is expressly forbidden and constitutes a violation of the Honor Code.

Revisiones (60 pts or 6% / 3 x 20 pts.)

Failure to turn in the original version along with the rewrite will result in a 5-point penalty (25%) on the value of the rewrite.  Students are welcomed to consult with the Professor on both the original and the rewrite to help them catch mistakes before turning in their work. However, students may not ask anyone else (other students or professors, native speakers, Spanish tutor, etc.) for help or proofreading of the temas. Doing so would constitute a violation of the BSC Honor Code.

Conversaciones: leer y opinar (80 pts. or 8% / 2 x 40 pts.)

On two occasions during the semester, students will have an out-of-class conversation in the Professor’s office with one or two of their classmates. These conversations will be completely spontaneous and students will not know the exact topic for the conversation until they arrive at the Professor’s office. About a week before each conversación, the Professor will post guidelines and a general idea of the topic on Moodle. Students will sign up for a 15-minute slot that is convenient for everyone involved; students who are no-shows for their chosen conversación time will receive a 10% penalty for their rescheduled conversación. Rubrics for evaluating the conversaciones are posted on Moodle.

CONVERSACION #2: Mirar la película Nueve reinas

Video Quizzes: de lectura y opinión (90 pts. or 9% / 3 x 30 pts.)

On designated days (see Programa) you will record and submit a video-monologue about your opinion of a particular reading material via Moodle. This should be done by using your personal computer at home or at the Language Lab. Students may prepare and practice the monologue beforehand but, should focus on spontaneous speech as much as possible when recording. Students may record on Flipgrid.com the exercise as many times as they like before sending the final copy to the Professor. Once the recording is completed to the student’s satisfaction, he/she will submit the video via Moodle. These recordings are scored based on a rubric of 30 points (3%) available in Moodle. The students will be given a Video Quiz sample so that they know what the communicative goals are. The video must be completed by the posted deadline shown on the Programa at the end of the syllabus.

Presentación oral: análisis literario de un cuento (60 pts. or 60% / 1 x 60 pts.)

Each student will have an oral presentation at the end of the semester, November 29^th and December 1st. This presentation is based on a literary analysis of a pre-selected short story from Latin America or Spain. A list of short stories will be posted on Moodle by the fourth week of class. Students should start preparing their presentation well in advance of the assigned date. Grading guidelines and scoring rubrics are posted on Moodle, but in general:

·         Presentations must last 10 minutes

·         It should include a brief bio of the writer and the elements of a short story (personajes, narrador, acción, ambiente, atmósfera, tiempo, desenlace, tema, título, crítica personal)

·         During the presentation, the rest of the class will be practicing the skill of interpretive listening. A reaction worksheet (hoja de comentario) is posted on Moodle; students should print it out and bring it to class on the day of the Presentación oral project. The reaction sheet is due the following class.

·         Students should strive for spontaneous speech. Reading from notes or excessive reliance on notes or a PowerPoint will result in a lower grade.

Exámenes parciales (200 points or 20% for 2 exams / 100 points each one)

There will be two tests during the semester. Dates are scheduled on the Programa (see p 5). The professor will discuss the format of the test and study strategies before the test. The completion of all assignments will help students prepare for these tests.  

Examen final (120 points or 12%)

This is a comprehensive exam given during finals week. The exam will include five sections: a reading comprehension activity, an essay-type of writing activity, a conversation activity, a grammar section and a vocabulary section. Furthermore, the conversation activity for the final exam will be conducted with a native speaker of Spanish via Talk Abroad (https://talkabroad.com/). The professor will discuss the format of the exam and study strategies before the exam. Daily preparation and completion of all assignments throughout the term will help students prepare for this activity. The final exam will take place on Tuesday, December 7th, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

The FINAL EXAM will include a 30-minute conversation with a native Spanish speaker via TalkAbroad. Students will need to register (Ramos2021-840736) and secure a date/time for this activity not later than 36 hours before the due date, Friday December 3rd, 2021, 4:00 pm or before (any day of the first week of December).
