    Getting started - Spring 2022

Welcome to BI 101!  I hope you enjoy our time together this semester.  I'm excited about teaching this course and I am looking forward to getting to know each of you! This page has what you need to get started.

Instructions for how to download and use the TurningPoint app for in-class polling from remote location.  Watch this video and download the app to your smart phone.

Daily Schedule Spring 2022 - Click Here

Best Contact info for Dr. Scot Duncan:   My email: sduncan@bsc.edu.  M-F 7am-4pm I usually reply quickly.  Evenings and weekends, I may reply, but otherwise I usually reply by the next weekday.

Syllabus:  All essential information about the course is in the Syllabus (click here).  Check for updates - they happen periodically.  There is a date at the top of the syllabus that is updated every time there's an update.  I also send emails when there is an important update.

Textbook:   The bookstore ordered hardcopies.  Answer your email from the bookstore and then pickup your copy. Let me know if there are problems.

Labs:   Lab is run through the lab Moodle page, and you may have a different instructor than you have for lecture.  First lab day is TBD.  Look for email from one of the lab instructors.

Small Group Discussions using MS Teams "Channels":
Even though we are a face-to-face class, we will be using MS Teams "Channels" during some class activities.  Here's a link to a video explaining how they work.  The video explains things for both instructors and students.

Do the following before the first day of class

    • Read the Syllabus, bring to class your questions about the course
    • Review the Study Aids section of Moodle.  In particular, follow the link to info on "tips on how to make the best grade you can in this course" at the top. This has my best advice for doing well in this course.
    • Begin the readings/videos for the first class.

Do this during the first week of class:

    • Block off at least six hours a week in your schedule to study for this course outside of class time
    • If you have Academic Accommodations, let your instructor know
    • Student Questionnaire: Please download, fill out, and submit (see dropbox below) the student questionnaire (click here) during the first week.
    • Take the Mock Quiz to set up and practice using Lockdown Browser.  See info about Lockdown Browser below. The Mock Quiz is posted in this section.
    • Take the Syllabus quiz
    • Take study tips quiz
    • Take Quiz on class 1 biology content (biodiversity)
Break Out Groups - for class activities:
You will be assigned randomly to a small group for class activities and discussions.  Your group assignment can be found here.
