    We are all part of families, for better and for worse. As the primary social institution, family gives us the beginning, walks through us the present, and takes us the future. This course is designed to explore the fundamental sociological concepts, theoretical approaches, and arguments of family. We will examine how individuals’ personal family experiences are affected beyond their personal choices, by social, cultural, and economic structures. Throughout the course we will investigate many diversity issues of family, including marriage, partnering, parenting, grandparenting, childhood, divorce, domestic violence, and social policy. Although focus on family issues in American society, we will have the opportunity to inspect differences between western (American) and eastern (particularly Chinese) cultures through comparison and contrast. In this process we will see how individuals’ family lives are shaped by broader social systems and better understand our own family experiences.

  • Book Review

    Having a global perspective is important to develop the capacity to be open-minded. Thus, you will have the opportunity to inspect a whole different parenting style from reading Amy Chua’s biography Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. You will write a book review (minimum 800 words) analyzing how culture plays a role in parenting and family relationships. You can earn a maximum of 20 points from this assessment.

    Guidelines 

    –You need to state 2-4 arguments in the review
    –Although you can make any arguments, “culture” should be the central, or at least relate to one of your major arguments.
    –It is about YOUR critical thinking on the ideologies in this book
    –DO NOT overly restate the stories from the book
    –Organize your paper properly (introduction, main arguments, conclusion)
    –Try to avoid emotional comments (like or dislike)
    –Treat it as a term paper, academic writing is expected
    –Proofread before submitting (get help from the writing center)
    –800 words minimum, double space, 12-point font
    –Turn-It –In assignment to test for originality

    Suggested Prompts 
    –Use cultural capital to explain Chua’s parenting philosophy.
    –How does Chinese culture play a role in her parenting philosophy?
    –Have you found anything that may share a common ground as western parenting?
    –How does the book relate to any topics we have learned in this class?
    –Chua’s book contains stories that may seem not directly relate to parenting but are part of her family life, such as her marriage with Jed, her relationship with her parents, and her relationship with her mother in-law. How do you think those experiences shaped her parenting style?
    –Is there anything from Chua’s arguments you may found reasonable, or valuable?
    –Other than parenting, what else in her book that interested you?
    –Overall, how did you like the experience of reading this book?

    Grading Rubric 
    –(12 points) Ideas & Contents: arguments are clear, and support are sufficient; address to at least 3 prompts
    –(5 points) Organization: Ideals are properly organized, includes proper introduction/transition/conclusion, and the structure of the paper is easy to be identified
    –(3 points) Vocabulary & Spelling & Grammar: academic writing, minimum spelling and grammar errors

  • Reflection Journals

    Almost everything we talk about in this course are common experiences we have in life. Thus, reflecting on how you relate what we learned in class to what you experience in life is essential. You will write 3 journals this semester. In every journal, you will reflect on the content we talked about in the past weeks.  You need to focus on 2-3 concepts / terms / theories / perspectives we talked about in class and relate them to your live experiences. How do you see our live experiences are explained by the concepts / terms / theories? Have you found anything new that you have never thought about before? Do you have disagreement with anything that we talked about in class? You should write about minimum 450 words for each journal, 12-point font and double spaced.  You will submit your writing to Moodle. Each journal worth 5 points and you can earn a maximum of 15 points for this assessment.

  • Movie Review

    you will write a paper (minimum 600 words, excluding references) on ONE movie at your choice. Although, this movie needs to be related to the general topic of "family". You must consult with the instructor and get approval ahead of time. 

    You need to watch the entire movie, and write an essay. How does the movie show the characters or traits of the the concept of family? How does the movie display the concepts / terms/ theories/ perspectives we discussed in class? Keep in mind that this is an essay assignment. Please don't simply answer the above questions like in an exam. Use the grading rubric below to structure your writing. And this is a Turn-it-in assignment, which will be tested for originality. 

     

    Grading Rubric:

    Explain how the movie display the characters or traits of the concept of "family". (4 points) 

    Use the stories / details in the movie to illustrate UP TO THREE concepts / terms/ theories/ perspectives we learned in this course. (8 points) 

    The writing has minimum grammatical errors and meet the minimum word count. (3 point) 

     

    Below is a general instruction (DOs and DON'Ts) for this assignment: 

    1. Don't write too much about the story or the plot in the movie. I have watched all of them so no need to inform me again. You can refer to the details, scenes or plots in the movie as providing evidences to your arguments. But keep it at minimum. 

    2. This is NOT merely a movie review. Please do not write about how well the actors /actress play in the movie. 

    3. Be CLEAR about the concepts / terms/ theories/ perspectives you are trying to connect to. Provide sufficient arguments on how the movie display those concepts / terms/ theories/ perspectives.

  • Reading Discussions

    You will read the assigned readings, post discussion questions prior to the class, attend the class, and answer discussion questions by the end of the day. Each post (question and answer) should be 100 words minimum. The questions should be based on the assigned reading. And the questions should be discussable. 
    Each question & answer pair is worth 2 points and you can earn a maximum of 20 points. 
    Keep in mind that there will be 14 discussion forums.
