Introduction
Whether in Periclean Athens or contemporary societies, the theater has always played an important role in mediating a community’s engagement with contemporary political, ethical, and social issues. In this course we will read a selection of tragedies composed and performed in antiquity and consider how these plays reflect the social, political, and religious concerns of the societies that produced them. We will pair our investigation of ancient drama with modern engagement with and reception of the Greek plays to consider how later dramatists have adapted, rejected, re-written, and re-contextualized a genre that traces its beginning back over 2000 years.
