Class Participation & Preparation (50 points or 5% or about 2 points per 25 class sessions)

All students are expected to be full participants in all daily classroom activities that include debates, role-play, videos, pair and group work, reading and singing. Students must prepare for class by completing all assignments in advance and be ready to participate in all class activities and discussions. All chapters of the textbook are to be read and reviewed completely PRIOR to coming to class the day that chapter is discussed. All reading assignments are to be completed at the due time assigned in the Programa.

Class participation, preparation and attendance are CRUCIAL given the conversational nature of the course. Students should take at least 1.5 hours to prepare each class session. They will be graded, among other things, on the following factors:

·       Completion of homework assignments by the due date: conducting readings, studying, recording video quizzes, writing compositions, and completing a variety of textbook exercises among others.

·       Constant use of Spanish in the classroom

·       Volunteering to answer and ask questions

·       Positive contributions to the class

·       Regular use of new vocabulary

·       Grammatically and phonetically correct answers

·       Progress in the “skill of communication”

·       Attendance

·       Alertness

Temas and Revisiones: Three times during the semester, students will write an essay of about 400 words in Spanish. Dates for each tema and rewrite are shown in the Programa found on Moodle. Temas and rewrites must be typed, double-spaced. After the tema is turned in, the Professor will indicate any grammatical problems the essay may have using the Corrections Key posted on Moodle. Once the original tema is returned to the students, they will correct the mistakes and turn in the typed corrected version and the original version by the date specified on the Programa. Failure to turn in the original version along with the rewrite will result in a 30% on the value of the rewrite.  Students are welcomed to consult with the Professor on both the original and the rewrite to help them catch mistakes before turning in their work. However, students may not ask anyone else (other students or professors, native speakers, Spanish tutor, etc.) for help or proofreading of the temas. Doing so would constitute a violation of the BSC Honor Code.

Video Quizzes (160 pts. or 16% / 4 x 40 pts.)

On designated days (found on your course Programa) you will record and submit a video-monologue via Moodle. This should be done by using your personal computer at home or at the Language Lab. Students may prepare and practice the monologue beforehand, but should focus on spontaneous speech as much as possible when recording. Students may record on Bongo the exercise as many times as they like. Once the recording is completed to the student’s satisfaction, he/she will submit the video online via Moodle. These recordings are scored based on a rubric of 40 points (4% of  the total grade). The students will be given samples for each video so that they know what the communicative goals are. The video must be completed by the posted deadline shown on the Programa at the end of the syllabus.

Presentación Oral (50 pts. or 5% / 1 x 50 pts.)

Each student will have an oral presentation once during the semester. Dates and topics will be posted on Moodle by the third week of class. Students should start preparing their presentation well in advance of the assigned date. Grading guidelines and scoring rubrics are posted on Moodle, but in general:

·       Presentations must last 8-10 minutes minimum

·       The presentation must incorporate the chapter vocabulary in a meaningful way; each student should use at least 15 new words in order to get full credit

·       Students should strive for spontaneous speech. Reading from notes or excessive reliance on notes or a PowerPoint will result in a lower grade.

·       During the presentation, the rest of the class will be practicing the skill of interpretive listening. A reaction worksheet (hoja de comentario) is posted on Moodle; students should print it out and bring it to class on the day of each Presentación Oral. The reaction sheet is due the following class period.

Conversaciones (80 pts. or 8% / 2 x 40 pts.)

On three occasions during the semester, students will have an out-of-class conversation in the Professor’s office with one or two of their classmates. These conversations will be completely spontaneous and students will not know the exact topic for the conversation until they arrive at the Professor’s office. About a week before each conversación, the Professor will post guidelines and a general idea of the topic on Moodle. Students will sign up for a 15-minute slot that is convenient for everyone involved; students who are no-shows for their chosen conversación time will receive a 10% penalty for their rescheduled conversación. Rubrics for evaluating the conversaciones are posted on Moodle.

Exámenes (140 points or 14% / 2 exams x 70 points each)

There will be two (2) formal assessments during the semester. For every three chapter texts covered we will have an exam. The exams will follow similar formats and contents to the exercises found within your text, workbook and website resources. The professor will discuss specific format of these activities and study strategies before the assessments. The dates of these exams are printed on your syllabus and found in the course calendar at the end, p. 6.

Portafolio Cultural (100 points or 10%)

One of the major objectives of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to utilize their communicative skills in Spanish while deepening their understanding of the Spanish-speaking world. Students are encouraged to participate in events and programs which involve the Hispanic community, such as visits to local Hispanic institutions (churches, medical centers, businesses or other organizations), interviews with members of the Hispanic speaking community (on-or off-campus), writing to pen-pals in a Spanish speaking country, attendance to cultural events hosted by BSC, among others (presentations, movies, shows), etc. Students are required to prepare and maintain a Cultural Portfolio which describes their involvement in such activities and should include visual aids, such as pictures, sketches as well as evidence such as tickets to the events and recorded interviews on tape. Statements around reflective thoughts should include: 1. Reason for the selected activity, 2. Description of the event (date, time, participants, and objectives), 3. What did I learn from this experience? 4. What did I like best and what did I like least of this experience? The minimum number of activities for the completion of this project is five. Each activity will be worth 20 points based on accuracy and completion making a total of 100 points per portfolio. Out of the five cultural activities two of them should be of an oral interview nature. The Portafolio Cultural is due on Tuesday, November 29^th. Before hand in it to the professor, students will conduct a round table presentation about their experiences with this project. The rubric and other details for this project are available on Moodle.

TalkAbroad is an online plaftorm that connects learners with native speakers for real-world conversations. Students will complete two 30-minute TalkAbroad conversations during the semester. One TalkAbroad conversation will be part of Exam I and the second TalkAbroad conversation will be part of the Final Exam. 

Students need to create a TalkAbroad account and then register into our TalkAbroad classroom (Ramos2022-729507); and thereafter use their personal access codes (received from the bookstore) to exchange them for TWO conversations. When time approaches, students need to secure a date/time for this activity not later than 48 hours before the date of the exams: Tuesday, September 27th 11:00 am for Exam I (September 29th), and Wednesday November 30th, 2022, 1:00 pm for Final Exam (December 2nd).

Examen Final (100 points or 10%)

This is a comprehensive exam given during finals week. The professor will discuss the format of the exam and study strategies before the exam. Daily preparation and completion of all assignments throughout the term will help students prepare for this activity. It will take place on Friday, December 2nd, 1:00 - 4:00 PM.
