You will lead and participate online news discussions on Moodle. I will incorporate the online discussions into my lecture as much as I can.

    (1) You will sign-up to lead ONE online news discussion. As a discussion lead, you are responsible to find a news article that is related to the topics in the coming week. Then, you will start a discussion thread (by midnight on Wednesday marked on the syllabus calendar) with the link to the news as well as a brief introduction on Moodle. Please make sure that your class won't need subscription to read the entire text. At the end of the introduction, you should propose 1-2 questions to guide the direction of the discussion. By the midnight of the coming Wednesday, you will write a short essay (minimum 250 words) to summarize and comment the responses on your forum. You can earn a maximum of 5 points for being a discussion lead, including 3 points for the initial post and 2 points for the essay.

Discussion Leaders: late initial post will receive 0.5 point penalty per day after the due date & time.

    (2) You will participate in online discussions by responding to discussion forums (including the one you started) on Moodle (deadline to respond is by 10:59AM on the Monday after the thread is posted). Each response (minimum 100 words) is worth 1 point, and you can earn up to 2 points per week regardless of the number of responses you make. Although you can respond to as many forums as you want to, you can only earn a maximum of 15 points by participating in discussions.

Discussion participants: All late responses after the due date & time will receive 0.

You will participate in a case study project supporting Girls Inc. of Central Alabama (Girls Inc.). Girls Inc. is trying to figure out how to best respond to their clients’ health needs due to pandemic. You will hear from the president of Girls Inc. about the organization, their mission and needs for the project. You and your classmates will perform consulting study through literature review, data analysis and solution proposing.

The president of Girls Inc. would like to be available to you if you have any questions. Dr. Connie Hill's email is chill@girlsinccentral-al.org.

    Research questions:
    1. due to COVID, what are the needs of the girls that we are not aware of ?

(pandemic, mental health, health, behavior change, friends, peer-support, academic performance, relationship within the family, etc.)

    2. how can Girls Inc. help? (more toward the solution part).

You will be graded on individual and group assignments toward this case study. More detailed information will be provided on Moodle regarding each assignment. Below is an overview:

    (1)  Literature review (10%). You will write a literature review (2 pages in length, 12-point font, double-spaced) to provide theoretical framework and background information for the case study. This is an individual assignment, and you should complete independently.

    (2)  Data analysis (10%). You will conduct qualitative data analysis and write up the results (6-8 pages in length, 12-point font, double-spaced). The qualitative interview transcripts will be provided on Moodle. I will hold a workshop to walk you through the coding process. This is an individual assignment, and you should complete independently.

    (3)  Solution & discussion (10%). You will propose solutions (2 pages in length, 12-point font, double-spaced) to help respond to the concerns emerged from the data. You will integrate literature and background information to in your writing. This is an individual assignment, and you should complete independently.

    (4)  Final report. (5%). You and your group will write a completed and polished report of the case study (minimum 10 pages in length, 12- point font, double-spaced). Your group will meet and work on the report in designated class time and after class. Since each one in your group has already done the individual assignment prior to this point, at this stage your group should focus on evaluating, share & compare, and put together a polished final report. This is a group assignment, and everyone in the group will receive the same grade for this assignment. Each group will submit one final report for grading. More details about this assignment will be provided separately on Moodle.

    (5)  Oral presentation. (5%). Your group will present the findings and solutions to the entire class on the last day of class. This is a group assignment, and everyone in the group will receive the same grade for this assignment. Each group will make one oral presentation. More details about this assignment will be provided separately on Moodle.

*** Due to the uncertainty nature of working with a real-world case, I reserve the right to adjust grading assignments under case study category at any time in the semester. Any changes will be communicated orally in class and in writing on Moodle.
