Welcome to the world of sociology! In SO 101, I will guide you to seek, form, and reshape your own sociological imagination, which is “the awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society" (C. Wright Mills, 1959). We will read, watch, and discuss materials that are related to varies topics of sociology, at local, national, and global levels. We will apply our sociological imagination to lived experience through various types of activities.  In all, I am dedicated to bringing the insights of the sociological imagination to your lived experience.

Almost everything we talk about in this course are common experiences we have in life. Thus, reflecting on how you relate what we learned in class to what you experience in life is essential. You will write 4 journals (450 words each, 12-point font, double spaced) this semester. In every journal, you will reflect on the content we talked about in the past weeks. You need to focus on 2-3 concepts / terms / theories / perspectives we talked about in class and relate them to your live experiences. How do you see our live experiences are explained by the concepts / terms / theories? Have you found anything new that you have never thought about before? Do you have disagreement with anything that we talked about in class?

Alternatively, you can do an audio / video submission for the same content. The audio /video recording needs to be at least 4 minutes long, and you will write down the  2-3 concepts in the comment box.

You will submit your writing or recording to Moodle. Each journal worth 5 points and you can earn a maximum of 20 points for this category.

    Overview

You will create a product, such as a website, Twitter account, radio program, artwork, game, speech, video, song, performance, monologue, public presentation, or any other creative work * to propose a social movement you may want to start. And you will write a short essay (150-200 words, 12-point font, double-spaced) to explain your project. You will upload your project as well as the essay to Moodle.

Note: A product like PowerPoint slides, a simple digital made poster or flyer has a high chance of receiving 0 for creativity. However, handmade /handwritten product will be exempted.  And you may consider accompanying the PPT, poster or flyer with a narrative or a speech if you want to earn points for creativity.

When you submit the product to Moodle, you may submit a file, a picture, a video, a link, or any other form that is acceptable on Moodle. For instance, if it is a sculpture, photograph it, and submit the photo. I will communicate with you if I can’t open the file you submitted. It is your responsibility to make sure that I receive the proper file that can be opened then graded.

You can do this project individually or team up with other classmates. If you choose to do this project in a team, you need to get the prior approval from me no later than November 18th, 2022. The project needs to be complex enough to be qualified as a team project. A clear stated division of labor must be submitted. Email me to request a prior approval form. Every team member will receive the same grade if you choose to do this in a team.

You will submit the product and the essay to Moodle by 23:59 on Dec 3rd, 2022.

And by submitting your assignment, you grant permission to publicly present and share your product in class and other peers in later semesters.

This is a creative project by nature. Please don’t let this document limit your imagination. If you have ideas outside of this scope that better suit you, please do not hesitate to let me know. Unless you get prior approval from me, your submission will be graded using the following rubric.
