Not published to studentsCurrentPlease sign-up for Four days upon which you will submit 1-2-page (double-spaced, typed) response papers, due at the beginning of class. Think of these bagatelles as opportunities to focus on a point in the reading that draws your attention, is especially important, puzzling, or emotionally meaningful to you. Don’t feel compelled to offer an encyclopedic overview. Instead, consider this exercise as a means to prepare for class and to work through some issues on paper before we meet to discuss them.
To be clear: this is response is an opportunity to engage in some short critical analysis. As such, you want to be sure that any claims you make are strongly supported with evidence from the text.
When constructing your short response, you may consider the following approaches:
1. Analysis of a particular theme or concept you've discerned in the text. You may also make clear how the text raises a set of questions (e.g. What constitutes freedom? What does it mean for one to be a citizen? What is political subjectivity? How does religion sometimes operate to abet oppression?).
2. You may draw tight parallels between the text and a contemporary phenomenon, or read a contemporary phenomenon through the lens of text(s).
3. You may also consider approaching this assignment by reflecting on what the author is missing. What have they left unsaid? What questions do they leave you with and why? Be specific and substantiate your argument with textual content.
If you want to explore others ways of approaching this, please consult us; We'd be glad to chat with you!
