Future Feminisms
Due Date
Presentation: April 28 and May 3
Essay: May 10 by 11:59 p.m. All papers should be posted to Moodle.
Directions
As we approach the end of the semester, we’ll start talking about the future—what comes next for gender and women studies? We’ll look at a few examples of discussions brewing on college campuses and in the larger world, but for this assignment, you’ll be tasked with researching and presenting on a topic that you think will be (or should be) the future of feminism.
The topic can be anything of your choosing. Keep in mind here, however, that many of gender, queer, and women’s rights movements of the past have tried to correct the mistakes of the past. So, one angle you might take is to think about what or who continues to be marginalized in these discourses. You might also consider issues that are supposedly “resolved” or have been “addressed” but that you think continue to need people working, thinking, and fighting for them.
Your project can also be of any scope and scale. This class has been very focused on Europe (primarily Britain) and the Americas, but there is much to be said about these issues in non-European and American contexts. You also might consider being hyper local; what sort of feminist issues do you see at BSC? In Birmingham?
Format and Grading Criteria
As part of this project you will give a short presentation (5-8 minutes) on April 23 or May 3, as well as write a brief essay (3-4 pages) arguing your point due by May 10. This project will count as 30% of your final grade.
Lateness Penalty
Unless I have approved a deadline extension in advance, late submissions will be lowered by a letter grade per 24-hour period. Late penalties begin immediately. If you want an extension, you must contact us at least 24 hours before the paper is due.
