Implicit Bias Assignment
Consider what you have learned about implicit bias. Generate a personal statement of what YOU can do to work to change these biases. The biases are naturally occurring. As humans we look for patterns. This is what saves our lives in some circumstances. For instance, checking to see if a snake’s head is triangular- therefore generalizing that snakes with triangular heads are poisonous and should be avoided- could save our lives.
However, acting on our biases about people can impact their lives and our own. Especially when we are in a position of power (i.e., teachers, coaches, parents).
How can you, in recognizing your biases, guard against treating people poorly based on these biases? What can you do about it?
Write a one-page summary statement of how biases might impact you and what your plan is to guard against the unfair actions based on biases. Due July 1 by midnight (20 points)
