IDS 142:  Living a Life of Significance

Fall Semester 2022

Professor Mark S. Schantz

First Essay Prompt:

Write an essay of 4-5 double-spaced, typed pages in which you draw from the materials we have examined in class to answer the question, what does it mean to live a life of significance?  By what criteria might we judge a life as significant?  What qualities, characteristics, and actions might be associated with such a life?  Why is this important?

Be certain that your essay:

Ø  Has a thesis or central argument.

Ø  Makes use of the Junger book and associated podcasts as well as the Cronon article and other resources we have considered in class.  You may bring other articles and research to bear, but this is not required for this assignment.

Ø  Is well written, coherent, and well-organized.

Ø  Has made a visit to the Writing Center for review by a peer tutor.

Ø  Is written in 11 pt. font, with appropriate margins.

Ø  Uses MLA citation format.

Ø  Answers the question of “so what”?  What’s the significance of your thesis or paper?

Papers will be due on Moodle on September 26 before class time.  Please note that this extends the time you have available to work on this assignment beyond the original due date on the syllabus, which was September 23.

I would like to meet with each of you individually before September 22 to discuss your essays.  We will be reading drafts of your essays aloud in class starting on September 19 and continuing on September 21.
