Division of Values

Completion requirements
Opened: Monday, 27 March 2023, 12:00 AM
Due: Tuesday, 4 April 2023, 9:30 AM

Due: Tuesday, April 4th at 9:30 am

Value: 100 points

Purpose/Objectives: The purpose of this assignment is to practice rendering different divisions of value by exploring different techniques to rendering value. This assignment is designed to introduce you to one of the two primary methods used to create value: Density.

Materials: white sketchbook paper, Graphite, Pens, erasers, and a portable light source.

Steps to complete the assignment:

  1. You will need 1 to 2 small pages out of your sketchbook.
  2. Set the Ping-Pong ball given to you in class on a surface in front of you. Make sure your light source (lamp, flashlight, studio lighting, window) is directed onto it. The direction and intensity of the light source is up to you. Cast shadows should be drawn accurately and depict the ball sitting on a flat surface.
  3. Create a 9 step value scale. The furthest right square should be completely white and the furthest left should be completely black. The remaining squares in between should be an even progression between the two (as seen in the sample below). Try to make the size of your square and the value transitions as consistent as possible.

4.  Create a full-scale drawing of your ping-pong ball using one of the graphic mark making techniques you plan to use for project 4. I should be able to see at least 5 distinct values and should be able to identify the 7 parts of light and shadow.
