We are going to be spending a lot of time together this month so might as well get to know each other! This will also help me in tailoring discussions with our speakers and in class.

Answer these questions throughout your discussion but also feel free to add additional information.

Where are your from? Why did you pick BSC? Year and Major? What classes (high school or BSC) interest you the most? What classes were easy or hard for you? Have you had any previous employment, internship or volunteer work in the environmental field? Do you have any parents, siblings, friends or other family that work in the environmental field? What kind of work environment do you see yourself - field, office, lab, combination, not sure? Do you want to work for a big corporation, small non profit, government? What are some of your education and career goals? Do you want to stay in Alabama?

Where are your from? I was born and raised in Central Florida.
Why did you pick BSC? I currently chose BSC because of its academics and BSC Lacrosse opportunities.
Year and Major? Expected graduation 2024 and my tentative major is Business.
What classes (high school or BSC) interest you the most? Biology, business course with Dr. Lester, marketing, some history, Sports.
What classes were easy or hard for you? Challenges: chemistry, physics and some math courses (trigonometry or calculus),
Have you had any previous employment, internship or volunteer work in the environmental field?   When younger I did many activities through scouting. Never been employed or have done volunteer work.
Do you have any parents, siblings, friends or other family that work in the environmental field?  My mother is a middle school science teacher and promotes environmental awareness in her school. She also spends her summer and time off teaching an environmental camp for children ages 7-12. When we were younger we were very involved in scouting and my father was a scout leader.
What kind of work environment do you see yourself - field, office, lab, combination, not sure? Do you want to work for a big corporation, small non profit, government?     I would like to someday own my own business. Unsure quite yet what direction to take. I have always liked being outdoors and I have always enjoyed being active within my local state parks. I would like to explore this area.
What are some of your education and career goals?    I would like to someday own my business and currently seeking for opportunities to explore ideas. I would like to investigate environmental issues and ways businesses can help protect wildlife and preserve habitats.

My name is Sankhepo Ndhlovu, and I am a freshman here at Birmingham Southern College. I am from a country called Zambia, which is located in the southern part of Africa. I chose to study in the United States because I have heard and read that a degree from this country makes it is easy to get a job anywhere across the world. I particularly chose to come to BSC because of its small campus size and student to faculty ratio, its location (weather), and because it is affiliated with the United Methodist Church of which my mother back home is a staunch member.
During high school, I was interested in social sciences and calculating subjects, and I had challenges with science subjects, especially biology. For this reason, I want to major in economics and minor in mathematics. Unfortunately, neither I nor anyone I know have had work experience in the environmental field. However, my brother recently graduated with a degree in Agriculture, and a friend of mine is completing his final year with a degree in Conversation, and I believe that they might get employed in the environmental field.
Because I am a very shy and introvert person, I see myself working in my own space, most likely an office, and for either a big corporation or the government. Some of my education goals are to increase my communication skills and earn a Master's Degree in my field of study. My career goal is to be at the top of my career by earning a managerial or executive position in whatever company I will be working for. If I decide to stay in the States after I finish school, I would love to stay in Alabama or any other state in the south that has got friendly weather.

I'm from Gadsden, Alabama. I picked BSC for a good education and athletics. I'm a freshman and undecided major. Marketing/business interest me, and marketing was an easier class for me. I have not had any employment due to athletics. I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but do not see myself working behind a desk. No one in my family works in the environmental field. I'd prefer working for a big corporation. I want to graduate and work my way up to a high level at my job, and I would like to stay in AL, but if I had to move, I would not mind moving.

My name is Sloan Miles, and I’m a first year student from Memphis, Tennessee possibly planning on majoring in Urban Environmental Studies or Biology. I’d say that the classes that interest me the most don’t necessarily have to be about a certain subject but about how committed and passionate the teacher or professor is  about the subject. I’ve always loved history and math because I like learning about what has worked/not worked for people and what could work in the future, and I like figuring out and solving problems.

The most challenging class I had last semester was Intermediate Writing not because of the work load but because of the intricacies and techniques that are necessary to have to communicate effectively while maintaining your own voice. However, I enjoyed it a lot, and would do it again easily.

I haven’t been employed or have had any proper work in any environmental areas, but I’ve volunteered for small projects within my city cleaning up rivers, trails, and planting trees.

No one in my family or immediate circle has worked in the environmental field, but I’m primarily interested in forest and wildlife management and see myself working hands-on within that field. I think I’d see myself best suited working with non-profit organizations.

Some of my goals for my education are to excel in every course I take whether it aligns with my major or not and to network with classmates and professors to gain an edge in future career opportunities. Career-wise I’d like to work for a job that I love doing, that provides enough for me and my family, and that lets me travel a lot. I’d like to be based somewhere in the midwestern or western regions of the US either in Montana or Wyoming.
