Hey, what’s up y’all? My name is Kathryn Patterson. I am from Talladega, Alabama. I am a sophomore here at Birmingham Southern, and I am currently a biology major and psychology minor on a pre-med track. After BSC, I hope to go to UAB to further my education. The end goal is not fully determined as of right now, but I guess you could say my primary interest is oncology. Since I was twelve, I have always said that I wanted to go into medicine, specifically that I wanted to work with cancer. I have been fortunate enough to know some amazing people that have sadly had to endure this horrible disease, and for some reason, I just feel drawn to it. I am also very interested in emergency medicine and the psychological affects of disease.

Some things I really hope to learn from this class are what causes infectious diseases? What are the ways that disease can be spread from animals to humans? What can we do to prevent the diseases from spreading? Another thing I would like to learn about is how patients with infectious diseases are treated and how to determine how far within a population a disease has spread and how a disease can be eradicated. A fact about me is that I am a certified archery instructor, and I used to compete. I am also a lifeguard and assistant swim coach and I swam competitively for eight years. I definitely hope to travel a lot in my lifetime. There are so many places I would like to go, but one place that I have to see before I die is Edinburgh, Scotland. A close second would be the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Both of these places are absolutely gorgeous, but Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn, and I think that speaks for itself.

Hey Kathryn! It was so nice to meet you in class today. I think it is super interesting that you are so driven to pursue medicine, especially in oncology. I have also had several close family members who have unfortunately suffered from fatal cancers and I would have to say it takes a special kind of person that wants to be involved in that field and pursues it. And the fact that you have been drawn to medicine from such a young age speaks even more to your character. I truly admire you for that. I also started off my college career thinking I wanted to be involved with medicine but ran for the hills when I experienced my first college biology class. So, saying that, I think highly of anyone who sticks to it after freshman year! I find all of your other facts about your self super interesting and I can't wait to, hopefully, get to know you more throughout the term!

Hey Kathryn,
Thanks for sharing your story and interests. I hate cancer, and I am always sad that my contribution is not that much to fight against such disaster disease. I don't blame myself that much, because science is not my thing, but still, give a big BRAVO to whoever spends hours trying to find a cure for certain diseases, especially cancer.
I am happy that we have such young people like you who fight hard to chase their passion in the medical field. My thumbs-up to you, girl! And I wish you nothing, but luck in your explorations journey. I just found out that you love Edinburgh, and I was blessed to visit this place; It is so beautiful but too cold for me. My brother goes there for school, and he loves it so much and beyond. Also, I am such a terrible swimmer, and you are a champion and a pool lifeguard, I need some tips to work on my swimming skills.
All the best in your life plans!
