I actually lived in Kathmandu, which is the capital. It isn't that close to the Himalayas or the Mt. Everest, and to get there is a mix of trekking and flying in an airplane. The flight takes up to an hour, but the trekking can take up to 12 days, mainly so that they get acclimated to the high altitude. And yes, we usually meet a lot of tourists and mountaineers aiming to climb the Everest or other mountains because Kathmandu is the only city that has an international airport. Essentially, it is the only link to the Everest for tourists from far away countries.
