Hello, im devan destafino. I plan to major in art as well as possibly minor in biology. I've been an artist my entire life and even spent my high school career at an art school honing my craft. I work mostly with old bed sheets tearing them apart soaking them in paint and the sewing the torn pieces together. I'm from chelsea Alabama, it's a small town about 35 minutes out of Birmingham.

Hopefully in the future I will be able to continue making art. Although art is my passion I have a shared love for biology, specifically marine life. Throughout my childhood, I have been fascinated with what lurks under the sea and after Birmingham Southern I plan to go to grad school to study marine biology.

I want to further my knowledge on the origins of disease and interspecies spread of disease and how it works. I find disease an essential part of ecology. Without disease populations would be out of control and lead social and environmental problems, and i often wonder are extreme advancements in medical science even worth it.

If money and time weren't an issue would chose to travel to Italy. I have Italian heritage and i'm curious to meet other DeStafinos out there. The story of how my family ended up in Alabama was from my great grandfather immigrated here from Sicily, Italy, he owned a bakery and even invented Davenport's Pizza marinara sauce. In his early 30s he died, never passing on the Italian language leaving the rest of my family subject to a strict redneck accent and behavior. It would be interesting to experience a non Italian-redneck DeStafino.

Hi Devan, I'm glad to have another class with you. It is so unique that you use old paint-soaked bed sheets in your art. The most amazing part is that you like the combination of Art and Biology, which is something I personally haven't seen pursuing together back in my home country. I also really liked the part in your introduction, where you brought up whether the advancement happening today is even worth it, and I feel it is an abstract question to ponder upon.
It is also really awesome that you have Italian heritage and that you would like to go to Italy, linking you back to your own roots. Your great grandfather must have been really good at his job to actually invent Davenport's Pizza marinara sauce.
