I personally feel like the Influenza of 1918 was a major outbreak and a problem but that it was due to limited resources and very little knowledge about the virus. Although there is vaccine for this flu virus of 1918 that was seen to have shown reduced risk of getting the flu. Although, there has been various bad outbreaks of this flu virus I do think it is a possibly it could have another major outbreak but I feel as if we are equipped and have a good enough healthcare system that we would be able to take care of it and stop the spread of infection before it got totally out of control.

When I think of the “next big one”, I think of something totally uncontrollable and deadly. It will be something we have very little knowledge about and something that just kind of sneaks up on us. Today we do have pretty good resources and knowledge with all of the past research that has been done and with all of the research still going on today that when something comes up expectantly we will have the resources to control it. A lot has changed over the years but one thing that hasn’t is that an estimated seventy-five percent of emerging infectious diseases are of animal origin (ecohealthline).  So when I see numbers like this it makes me feel like something new will emerge from an animal species, which could be extremely deadly and infectious making it hard for us to control because we will have very little knowledge about it.

Hey Katlyn! I would have to say you have a good point. What people went through back in 1918 is something our generation might not have to face. With the advancement of medicine being made drastically and our unlimited resources it might be hard for a disease like the flu to cause as much damage as it did in the past. If I had to guess I would have to agree with you and say the Next Big One will be something very new and very dangerous. Like you said, I think if the influenza virus  was to make a reappearance our doctors, specialists and officials will do a much better job of keeping it under control before it got too serious. I think you made some great points. If you had to pick a past infectious disease that had such a deathly outbreak before and predict it coming back or even mutating into something even more deadly which would you pick? I wrote about the current coronavirus outbreak and predicted it being the possible “Next Big One.”

I completely agree that the next big pandemic will not be another flu. I feel like there is enough knowledge about the flu, and the flu viruses are constantly being monitored to have another outbreak that has as much success as the flu of 1918. I think there can definitely be another big flu but not with the same fatality rate that the flu of 1918 had. I agree that it is going to have to be some new virus that there is little to no knowledge on. I also agree that it is something that will sneak up on us. I think that if it is highly contagious before the symptoms even appear then it will be able to sneak up on us and have around the same fatality rate as the flu of 1918.

Hey Katlyn! I thought that the flu would be a big problem in the future. I completely agree with you when you said the next big one would be ‘totally uncontrollable and deadly’. That was a really good way to put it. Although we do have the resources to control new outbreaks, it’s still pretty scary because there are places that don’t have these resources and control measures that we do. In addition, the fact that so many diseases come from animals makes control and tracking the disease extremely difficult. Furthermore, I think that a new disease is even more scary than an old disease that has a high fatality rate because we don’t know much about it.
