The Influenza of 1918 was a huge outbreak that killed thousands of people. I personally do think that another flu virus will come about in the future. However, I do not think it will ever be as big as the one in 1918. The reason I think this is because, that was the first huge flu outbreak as it infected about 500 million and about killed 50 million people worldwide (CDC). Well now we have seen it happen and we know it could potentially happen again. That is why we are constantly coming up with new drugs. So, if it does end up coming again I feel like it could possibly be isolated rarely quickly because of the amount of modernized technology and research we have and can use.

I feel like when it comes to having a huge worldwide pandemic, the virus or disease will have to be one we have never heard about. I think this because, people would have to find out many questions and do many experiments because they can come out with a treatment to try and cure it. They would have to know where it came from, who is the reservoir host, and much more. They would also have to start from square one. This would all time a lot of time, so by the time they would have figured out what it is and a way to stop it, many would already be infected and probably dead.

Cassidy, I agree. I don’t necessarily think that “The Next Big One” will be the flu. I also believe that it will probably be something we have never heard of, which leads me to think that it could possibly be the new coronavirus. This new coronavirus seems to fit the criteria of “The Next Big One.” I agree that researchers know too much about the flu, we learned in class that the flu is studied year-round to ensure that we are given the best flu shot possible for the next flu season. For that reason, I believe the flu is studied too much for us to have another major outbreak of it, resulting in the large number of deaths that the 1918 flu had.

Abigail I agree that the flu will not be the next big one simply because of just how much it is studied. I agree that it will likely be an understudied disease or potentially a disease that has been weaponized to become the next big one if it is a common disease like flu. You bring up an interesting idea with the new coronavirus/SARS outbreak fitting the criteria of the next big one since it spreads person to person now and is also known to be able to spread across continents on air planes. This may prompt an increase in the overall studying of coronaviruses but I do not think it will be able to result in nearly as many deaths as the 1918 flu did.

Well after writing my forum I see the point everyone is making that the flu is very much studied and that we probably would be able to find a vaccine or a cure if there was another outbreak of any sort of flu. I do agree that the next big one will for sure be a disease that spreads easily and that is under studied leaving us at a disadvantage just like you said we would have to start at square one to try and find a cure and would probably be too late by the time they would or just would never be able to finish it.
