As much as I would not entirely disagree that the deadly event like Flu in the century could recover in the coming decades; however, I would say that maybe it won't kill as much as millions of people died in 1918. Unlike in the past years, we have numerous advanced scientists working a day and night to provide a valuable head start in limiting severe disease and death for both current and future viruses like influenza. The fact that the world is becoming better in technology is another good news that will help in combating any epidemic outbreak would occur.

Today, there are lots of health challenges that remain unsolved and many deadly diseases with no cure. Still, we have primary facilities and support resources in fighting against the spreading of diseases. The only way the other pandemic attack would occur if the animal-like Guinea Pig, is the second consumed animal in the world, and the hamster's meat is also considered as " white meat" because they have fewer amounts of fat and cholesterol. Guinea Pig is also one of the most popular pets in the world. It is one of the animals that can make a quick impact on the people.  It would be hard if the Guinea Pig transmits a particular virus to the people as the closest animal, and they would be no sooner suspicion of Guinea Pig to be the animal host of the disease, let's call it "GP Virus." It would be a good virus that will later turn into bacteria if not treated earlier between 4-5 months of exposure to the GP virus.

A viral infection turning into bacterial would be another puzzle added to the scientist while figuring out the root and layout of the disease. The GP virus and GP bacteria would be very contagious in all ways; airborne, direct contact with body fluids with the clue-less symptoms. GP virus would not only be a hard puzzle but will be able to reach dozens of people worldwide.

Hi Diane,

I see your point that the next big one would probably not be influenza and you do make a good argument with the advancement of technology and science to combat the new influenza strains attacking the human population. It is really interesting that Guinea pigs are one of the most consumed animals and are so accessible to us. Pairing that with highly contagious and airborne would definitely make it dangerous. GP virus could very much be the next type of viruses to emerge and hit humans. Have you read anything on whether something from guinea pigs has already spilled over?
