Hi Everyone!

My name is Kamryn Bendolph but you can call me Kam. I am from Huntsville, Alabama. I have two little brothers ages 8 and 12 and I run track here at the school. I am majoring in Pre-Health and my goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner after working as a nurse for a couple of years in the emergency room. I have always loved to help people out and I used to love diagnosing my brother’s when they got sick so I think that the health care field is a perfect field for me to go into. In this class, I really want to learn about the CRISPR/Cas9 system that genetically modifies genes. In Huntsville, we have a company called the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology where they do things such as Genetic Counseling. I have always been curious about the stuff that they do for people with incurable diseases so I hope that this class will help me figure out what they have going on. I would also like to learn more about the HIV 1 & 2 strains that we talked about in class and what the results of the CRISPR/Cas9 on deleting the gene for the HIV virus means for the future. If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to Australia simply because I have always wanted to go and see the coral reefs and the abundance of life that they hold. I also want to go to the outback and see a scorpion and a kangaroo. After that, my life will be complete.

Hi Kamryn! I feel as tho we are very similar. I also have two little brothers; however, they are slightly older. They are 17 and 13 years old and just as rambunctious as ever. I am also an athlete at Birmingham-Southern, so I understand the struggle of prioritizing and balancing academics before sports and other social obligations. I find it interesting you would like to work in the emergency room, as that could not be further from the future I envision for myself. This concept is what is so unique about the field of nursing. The same qualifications can create a completely different job outlook. I look foward to seeing you in class!

Hey Kam!
I feel like we are really similar. I have 4 younger siblings, they all vary in ages. I also am majoring in health sciences and I want to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I've always wondered about the incurable diseases and how they use genetics and other resources to find a cure for them. As well, when we spoke about HIV 1 & 2 strains in class I just want to know more about each strain and the origin behind the HIV virus. I want to know how they are trying to treat each strain, and how they are using CRISPR/Cas9 system. Australia is a good place to go visit. I want to go there to go deep sea diving, and also want to see the coral reefs and the different kinds of animals they live there.

Hi Kam! I love that about your little brothers, I often catch myself giving my little sister a diagnostic whenever she is sick. That is super cool you want to work in the Emergency Room, which takes a special kind of person to be able to deal with the chaos and all the interesting cases that will come in. You seem pretty calm and collected so there is no doubt in my mind that you would be an amazing ER nurse. I love to snorkel and so it has always been on my bucket list to go to Australia and see the Great Barrier Reef, hopefully we will get to see it before it is gone.

hey kam! I also used to run “check ups” on my younger brother, but never when he was actually sick, so I really had to force him to sit still while I took his vitals. He hated it, of course because what 5 year old boy wants to pretend to go to the doctors office. I think it’s cool that you’re interested in the CRISPR/Cas9 system, I hadn’t really heard of it until I got to college, so it really blows my mind. I also want to visit australia someday. I’m interested to see how the plants and animals evolved there to fit their environment, especially since it’s such a big area of land separated from anywhere else.
