Hello! I'm Viktoria and I am a Sophomore Health Sciences major with a minor in Gender and Women's Studies. I grew up right her in Birmingham in the Avondale area. I like being from Birmingham and going to BSC because I get to see a whole new side of the city and experience it with my friends for the first time. I plan on going to nursing school and being a traveling nurse for a while. Then I want to go to school to be a nurse practitioner in women's health.  I also want to get my midwifery license. I have always known that I wanted to work with women and I got to shadow a doctor which really helped me to decide to help women through improving their health. I want to work in a rural clinic and help pregnant women who do not have easy access to hospitals. I want to learn more details about mutations in genetics and I want to solidify the knowledge I already have so I am more confident in what I know. I think that CRISPR is also really interesting and I am excited to actually understand how it works and the significance it could have on how genetic diseases are treated. I am an RA in Margaret Daniel and a lot of people know me because they see my cat Layla in the window from the res quad. And if I could go anywhere, I would want to take a tour of Italy in the early spring and see ancient ruins!

Hello Victoria! I didn't know that you wanted to get a midwifery license! That's so cool! And rural health is absolutely an area with enormous needs--especially for prenatal care. Over the summer I heard a case presentation from infectious disease physicians about a baby who had been transported from rural Georgia to Atlanta for an unknown infection. Turns out, the baby had HIV, which had caused her to be immunocompromised, and she had gotten secondary infections. An HIV positive mother has a very low chance of passing it onto her baby with proper care, and this woman had gotten some prenatal care, but she was never tested for HIV. Having someone there to provide consistent prenatal care could definitely make a huge difference, so I think that's awesome.
Have you talked with Professor Catherine Cashio? She's a doula, so she might know some more people you could shadow or have some interesting things to tell you. What kind of doctor did you shadow? Where do you want to travel as a nurse?

Hi Viktoria! We have a lot in common. I grew up in Birmingham too! I love seeing the different side of the city that you normally don't see in high school and the food is just incredible. I also am planning on going to nursing school and would love to be a traveling nurse for a while. When I was at UAB this jan term I met a ton of traveling nurses and they love it! They get to travel to so many different places and make so many connections. I think it's so cool that you want to get your midwifery license - when I am studying abroad I plan to take a midwifery class for fun! I am also obsessed with your sweet cat Layla! Italy is probably my favorite place on this earth so pack me in your suitcase please.

Hey Viktoria, Carol Johnson here! You are so determined I learn that more and more every time I have a conversation with you. That is interesting you want to be a travel nurse, because I am hoping to be a travel physician in developing countries. That is awesome you want to get your midwifery license. What is the process for getting your midwifery license? I would so do that with you. What about women’s health do you want to help directly improve? Also, I would like to hear about your shadowing experience, because I have read into rural areas and the struggles those communities face medically. However, I have never read about the experiences pregnant women face. Do you love being an Ra? I have seen the ancient ruins in Italy, and it is breathtaking I hope you get the opportunity to go.
