Hi! My name is Caitlin Cain. I am a sophomore health science major on the pre-nursing track with UAB. I was born and raised in Nashville, TN and I hope to move back there after college. I plan on becoming a CRNA (nurse anesthetist). In order to do this though, I will have to attend the AMNP program at UAB for an RN and Masters in Nursing. Then, I will have to work in the ICU for two years before applying to CRNA school, which is three years. I have a long road ahead of me, but I am super excited. Over Jan-term I was able to shadow a CRNA and learn more about what they do, and this experience definitely reinforced my decision to become a CRNA. In this class, I hope to learn more about genetic mutations that occur. I am really interested in learning about autoimmune diseases and how those happen. I am interested in learning how those autoimmune diseases are passed on from one generation to the next. I am also very interested to learn about how some characteristics are passed on through generations. I am also interested in learning how disabilities including depression or ADHD are passed on to the next generation. A fun fact about me is that I have four younger siblings. Two of my younger siblings are twins, but they look and act nothing alike. If money and time were not an issue, I would love to travel to all seven continents. It is on my bucket list to reach all seven continents, so I would love to travel to Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. I would also love to go to Europe for an extended period of time and visit each country, especially Ireland and Italy. I loved Ireland and Italy when I visited them before and I would love to go back and spend more time there.

Hey Caitlin! I’m so excited that we are relatively on the same career track because I love taking classes with you. Also, I wish I was from Nashville because I feel like you can never run out of new or fun things to do there. I think your career plan is awesome and if anyone can do it, it’s definitely you! Though I am also interested in learning about autoimmune diseases, I think it’s super interesting that you want to learn about how disabilities are passed onto the next generation! That’s something I had never thought of, but I would absolutely love to learn about. I also love your answer about where you would travel to! I feel like most people thought of one country or city, but you said all seven continents! Honestly, if money and time aren’t an issue, why not?

Hey Caitlin, your interests impress me as I would never be brave enough to go to Antarctica. Traveling and nursing as you know have a tendency to go together if you look at certain programs. It sounds like you have focused your interest into your classes. I too am interested in learning how  ADHD and depression become familial. I’m extra curious about genetic interventions to alter t hose disorders. It seems like at the rate you are working I’m sure you’ll be traveling the world soon. I too would like to go to Italy and I also have been to Ireland. Ireland is on my “going back” list as well.
