My name is Mary Bullock and I am a junior psychology major from Birmingham Alabama. I have grown up in Birmingham since I was 6 and am very ready to move. I plan to apply to neuroscience graduate programs this fall and hopeful conduct research in the future. I would like to both work in a lab and teach as a professor. I am very interested in neurodegeneration in cases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. I have had the opportunity to work in two labs since the fall of last year. One lab is here at BSC for Parkinson’s and the other is at UAB where I trace neurons and preform rodent surgeries. I hope to learn the foundations of genetics and the CRISPR cas nine system because it is becoming a regular procedure in many neuro labs, and we use genetic modification in my UAB lab. Genetics in general are a crucial skill in neuroscience and I’m excited to learn how we come to look and act the way we do. I play piano by ear, so if I can sing the song in my head, I can play it on the piano. I am very very bad at reading and playing sheet-music as a consolation. I also play bass guitar and have played in multiple Spanish churches as their pianist/bassist and can also speak Spanish. If I could go anywhere I’d go to Venice for the musical history and to go tubing down the canals. (PS I look mad all the time but that’s just my face.)
