Hi, my name is Evie Morton (Eh-vee). I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama in the Homewood suburb. I went for the first semester of my undergraduate education to DePaul University in Chicago and then I transferred here in the Spring of 2019. I am a health science major and I am on the pre-heath health. I am leaning more towards being a PA (Physicians assistant) but I am still considering pre-nursing and I plan to take the MCAT as well so maybe med-school is in my future. I know for sure I want to go into medicine because of how much I love the hospital environment and everything that comes with medicine. I hope to get a closer look at the correlation between genetics and cancer. I am very interested in Breast Cancer and I know there is a gene that can be passed on to female offspring in a family. I cannot wait to learn more about the makeup of that gene and cancer genes in general. Something interesting about me is how much of an avid beachgoer I am. From my early childhood, my family has been prone to traveling to the beach almost every other weekend and although I do not have time to go as often as I used to, I still love to travel to the beach. With that in mind, if I could go anywhere in the world and money was not a problem then I would go to an island in Greece and live out my mamma mia fantasy. I love snorkeling so I think I would really enjoy staying on an island surrounded by perfect blue water.

Hi Evie. I'm interested in the genetic link associated with Breast Cancer too! Breast Cancer Education and Awareness is my sorority's national philanthropy project, so I have learned a bit here and there about the connection. It is really interesting how mutations to the BRCA gene can result in cancer and that the mutated gene can be inherited. I read somewhere that roughly 1 in 400 people have inherited the mutated BRCA 1/2 gene from one of their parents. I have personal connections to cancer through my family, so I'm interested in how it develops and how other lifestyle factors can influence your risk.

Hey Evie! I’m so jealous you grew up in Homewood because that is definitely my favorite suburb of Birmingham. I drive to Homewood quite often to go to Cookie Fix! I think it is awesome that even though you don’t know what you want to do, you still plan on taking the MCAT. That will open up so many opportunities when the time comes to decide! I am also very interested in Breast Cancer because when I was a kid, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She got tested for the breast cancer gene, and I am very thankful that she doesn’t have the gene. I would also love to go to Greece. I have ever only seen pictures, and it looks beautiful!

Hey Evie! I am so happy that you chose to come to Birmingham Southern and that we are in the same classes this semester. Before our internship this January, I was leaning towards being a physician's assistant as well but after learning about the accelerated nursing program through our partnership with UAB, I started to change my mind. I am also interested in learning how cancer genes get distributed. I love the beach and being surrounded by water but the closest thing I have gotten to that lately is listening to nature sounds on my phone! Snorkeling sounds so fun and I have been dreaming to go in Australia so hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.
