Hey friends, my name is Carol Johnson! I am a sophomore biology major with a potential Spanish minor on a premed track. I am from Tuscaloosa, Alabama... so Roll Tide to that! I went to high school at Northridge High School. In high school I played soccer and volleyball. Fun fact I am on the Women's Soccer team, I also can perform quite a few circus tricks on the trapeze/ Mexican cloud swing, I can juggle, and I have been to China to pick up my adopted little sister!  After college I plan on joining the Peace Corps to hopefully work with AIDS awareness, Youth Development, or Healthcare and better familiarize myself with Spanish in developing countries. The past month I had the opportunity to intern at Princeton Hospital in Emergency Medicine, Sports Medicine, General Surgery, and Pathology. I absolutely fell in love with emergency medicine and I love kids, so in the long run I would love to be a Pediatric Emergency physician. I also believe it is important to experience different cultures and walk through life with a variety of people, so I would love to work for Doctors Without Borders at some point in my career.  identify with Donna from Mamma Mia so I would have to take a trip to Greece and sail around to all the different areas. Greece also has such a rare history that has shaped so much of our world today. Plus, Greek Mythology has always fascinated me. I am so excited to study genetics with everyone this semester. I’m not as familiar with everything genetic entails. I would love to discuss how the environment affects genes and how our genetics change throughout our life, or what happens to them while aging.

Hi Carol! That is so cool that you want to join the Peace Corps after college. I have heard it is such a cool experience to help people in need while seeing the world. I have also heard that emergency medicine is a super-fast pace field and you see new things everyday meaning you have to always be on your toes. It seems to be right down your alley! I personally don't think I could keep up even though it seems fascinating. I am on the Men's Soccer team here so we have that in common but I don't think I could get on a trapeze without it being a hazard to my health!!!

Hey Carol! I think it is so awesome that you possibly want to minor in Spanish. I know Spanish is such a useful second language, especially in the medical field. I would also love to learn Spanish, but it is very difficult. I can’t believe you want to join the Peace Corps! That is amazing! Instead of applying directly to medical school, after my friend graduated from college, she joined the Peace Corps, and now she lives in Africa! In terms of vacations, I would also love to travel to Greece, but a surprising fact about me is that I have never seen Mamma Mia.

Hey Carol! I went to McAdory High School and we played NorthRidge in softball, so I have been to your high school several times. I have always tried to juggle but could never master it. One of my friends from high school also has an adopted sibling from China, but it's a boy. I also did an internship at a hospital, but I did mine at UAB. I was did rotations in the clinics, the cardiac floor, the ICU, the epilepsy floor, the vein clinic, the endoscopy floor, geriatrics, palliative care, and the plastics OR. I love kids but for some reason I do not want to work in pediatric medicine. I like to see healthy kids, and i'm not sure how I would handle seeing sick kids all day. I really found a love for geriatrics and caring for the older people. I am interested in psych and the older patients developed dementia in the hospital and it was really interesting to see that, but it is also reservable once their illness is managed.
