The longer a woman waits to become pregnant, the more at risk she is putting her and her baby for complications or serious problems. It is noticed that in the U.S. the birth rate of women in their 30s or older is at the highest peak (Urmc.rochester.edu, 2020). Some risks that could affect the mother and child during the pregnancy are miscarriages, birth defects, twins, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and an overall difficult labor (Urmc.rochester.edu, 2020). Genetics also plays a role in pregnancies. Complications that involve genetics that could be experienced are twins, chromosome problems, such as kids with down syndrome, and birth defects. As most people know, women do not continue to make new eggs throughout their life so their eggs age with them. I like to think of this like old people, because when people start getting older, they also take on new illnesses and problems. It is just what comes with age. One risk mentioned with older pregnancies was chromosome problem. The risk for a chromosome problem can increase the risk for the child to have down syndrome, and after one child is born with down syndrome, the chances of having another child born with down syndrome are higher (Urmc.rochester.edu, 2020). Chromosome issues can also influence the risk of miscarriage (Urmc.rochester.edu, 2020). Some risks the mother could face from a pregnancy of the age 35 and older is ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, heart attack, and even death (Nichols, 2020). These problems could not only affect the mother during the pregnancy but could potentially develop to chronic illnesses over time. Some technology that focuses on these issues during older pregnancies is something called IVF. It gives the doctors the ability to analyze and maybe even alter the DNA of an embryo (Wymelenberg and (US), 2020). I personally, don’t have an issue with pregnancy over the age of 35. I straddle the fence because some women want to have experience in life and feel like they are ready to handle a child. Some women might want to even have years of a life with just her and her husband. I do think people should consider all the factors when trying to become pregnant because it not only affects you, but it also affects your child.

Mackenzie great job researching the topic of advanced maternal age! I was unaware that woman pregnant 35 and older could suffer from a heart attack or a series of different types of strokes. Did you enjoy investigating different fertility treatment options to combat advanced maternal age issues? I thought the science and medicine behind IVFs was very interesting. I know you want to pursue a career in the medical field which could take years to establish a career, so have you thought about starting to save money for fertility options in case you began to have children when you are older? I have had a few women in their professional careers advise me to start saving now, so that is why I ask.

Mackenzie, I also don’t have an issue with considering being pregnant over the age of 35. I think a lot of women now a days want to start their careers and get financially stable before they have children. I totally agree that woman should take into consideration the affects, risks and complications that come with pregnancies before they have a baby. You’re right it doesn’t just affect the mother it also affects the baby. There are so many risks that could happen to the baby and the mother during pregnancy. Like you said in your forum, some risks can lead to future problems like chronic illnesses.

Hello Mackenzie!
I think that you researched this topic well and came to many of the same conclusions that I did as well as our other classmates. I noticed how you noted that genetic complications could arise from twins. Are you referring to this as occurring naturally (as in a woman over 35) or through other fertilization technologies such as IVF? I think that twins can cause the mother and pregnancy to be a high-risk case because there are many complications like premature birth and low birth weight that comes with having multiples in a pregnancy. I, like you, am not opposed to pregnancy over the age of 35. I think that it is becoming more common in our society to let women get further in their careers and education, so children have become less prominent to women in their 20s. I agree with you that many risks can come with pregnancy after the age of 35, and I think that these risk factors should be something that women and their husbands consider when trying to conceive after age 35.
