I have been interested in getting my DNA tested for a while but last semester we talked about it in our sociology class and ever since then, I have been reluctant about getting it done. In that class, we talked about how the different governments could potentially use all of that information against us in the form of clones or to use the information to make a disease that no human could combat. These types of tests could tell us about our ancestry and what cultures make us who we are which I think is pretty cool. It can also tell us about the genes that we have the predispose us to certain diseases like diabetes. The tests can also tell you about certain traits that you have that aren’t necessarily life or death. For example, it can tell you whether or not your hair is more likely to lighten in the sun or what the odds of you liking a certain taste or smell are. How do they do this you might ask? Companies like 23 & Me take samples of your saliva and deliver it to a lab where they extract DNA from the saliva sample and process it on a genotyping chip. I personally believe that the results are accurate because the samples are run through a computer program that does the same thing every time.

If I were to take a DNA test and find out that I had a disease that would make me die prematurely, I think that it would cause me to change how I am living. I think we all have a habit of living our lives like we have time because we often say “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “It can wait until later” but if we realize that our time is limited, I think everyone would live their life much differently. As far as ethics goes, the only way that it would be ethical for these DNA testing companies to use our samples for research would be if we gave them consent. There are some people out there who wouldn’t mind having their DNA used to help cure diseases, but only if their permission was given. I do believe that DNA testing will be required in the future just because of its insight into all of the different variants that could be behind different health disorders.

Hello Kam,
I did not know about how the government could use our DNA to have clones or to use our information to make a disease that no human could combat. That is very scary. I also think that in the future DNA testing will be required by the doctors. I agree that people would be willing to let the testing company use their DNA but only if they have their consent because there are people in the world that would not like them using their DNA at all. I think they would just have to respect everyone’s decision to let them or not let them use their DNA.

Hello Kam,

I'm also ecstatic about getting my DNA tested I really want to do it , but I do have my stipulations about it. As Natalie stated I also did not know about how the government could use our DNA to clone or to use our information to make a disease that no human could combat. That to me is very nerve wrecking. Also, I did not know that these types of test could tell us what cultures made us. Kam I agree with you on how you said DNA testing is required in the future because of its in sight into all the different variants that could further different health disorders.

Hi Kam,

I am apprehensive as to whether I would ever have my DNA testing. As a person, I would rather not know if I had a life-altering fate. I believe this information would be hard to process for not only me but my family as well. If I ever where to get my DNA sequenced, I would not want the company to allow outside access to my genetic information. I value medical privacy to the utmost highest standard and believe this information could easily fall into the wrong hands and be used against humankind to generate money and propel large corporations.

Hey Kam,
I did not think about our genetic testing getting used against us in the future. It is kind of scary to think that someone could potentially make a clone of you or a disease that your immune system could never fight off. I also talked about how knowing the results from your genetic testing could change the way a person lives. For me I would probably be scared to do some things knowing that I had a mutation, but I guess it would also depend on what kind of mutation I had to change what aspects of living that I change. I also do not know if I would want to know if my unborn child was going to have a genetic mutation. I feel like it would make pregnancy a whole lot worse and stress me out so much, which could become a danger to the child's life and mine. I think I would want to just find out any mutations and diseases after birth and take action then. I do think that genetic testing is good for like ancestry and helping find treatment for certain diseases.
