I honestly haven’t really thought about doing a DNA test. I do think it would be interesting to see what my DNA would say. 23& me has two options, you can either test your ancestry and health or ancestry and traits. Veritas and Genos are also testing the same thing. These tests can tell you about diseases that could happen to you because you have that trait. This doesn’t mean that you will get it, it means that you have the possibility of getting it. These tests can also help you with your health, for example if your prone to diabetes the test can tell you that and you can then change your lifestyle around to make sure that this won’t happen.  These tests can also help you look at your ancestry and see who your ancestors are and what type of health they were in. How these tests work is that you will pay for the product and then they will send you their kit. They have you spit in a tube and then you send it back to them and then they test it.

I would believe the results to a certain point. I would try not to get absorbed in the results because who knows how accurate they are. There are probably tests that are better than others, so it depends on which one you choose. I wouldn’t let the test results affect my life because it doesn’t change anything. I am still going to live my life. If I knew that I was going to die prematurely, I would just live life to the fullest and not take anything for granted. I would not like my health insurance company to know my results because I feel like they would definitely charge me more if they knew I was going to have some medical problems. I think it would be acceptable for medical companies to use the DNA from people, but they would have to have strict rules and they would have to get consent from that person to use their DNA. I think in the future, doctors are going to want to take a DNA test.

Hello Natalie,

I did not know about the ancestry part, you can look at who your ancestors and what type of health they are in. I agree with you about the part that you would try not to get absorbed in the results because like you said Natalie they might not be accurate. You said you wouldn't let the results affect your life, I said otherwise I believe I would let it affect my life because I feel like it would be a timer on my back. I do agree with the fact when you say the insurance company would charge you more if they found out you were diagnosed with more medical problems than before. I completely agree with the point you made about having strict rules and having a persons consent to use their DNA.

Hey Natalie! I also think it would be really interesting to learn more about my DNA, but after researching this topic, I don’t know if it would be worth the possible risks. Also, the tests themselves are fairly expensive, and at this point in my life, I have better things to spend my money on. If I were to get tested, I also agree that I would try to avoid reading into the results too much. I learned a lot about the accuracy of these tests, and if my results raised any serious issues, I would seek further medical testing. In terms of the ethics behind DNA testing, I also think it is necessary the company have the individual’s consent before sharing any type of their information.
