I agree, we don't know how they will act, and we are only theorizing about the good it will do. But I personally was afraid they would just be hunted to death again, not worried about overpopulation. The ivory trade business is still in full swing, and if the Asian Elephants of today are having a rough time dodging hunters, imagine the trouble a prized ancient beast with a mouth stuffed with white money would face, especially at the low numbers we will be starting with.
All that aside, I agree with you, I think it would still be a good idea to try and master this skill, just for its positive impact as a whole. I think we should give the mammoth a shot. As for further use of these technologies to, say, edit current creatures, or "play god," I think it eventually will be necessary, and I think we should be careful.
