Don Ogle's quote is something that I struggle with often. Growing up in a family full of teachers, I knew I always wanted to teach. I love helping students learn and understand history. It was not until late high school that I realized I wanted to teach history, so a lot of the time, I see teaching as a chance to help students learn and not that I am an expert. Now that I am in college and taking all kinds of history classes, I do get excited about teaching specific topics and the idea of getting teach parts of history that students may not have ever heard. The one thing that I always get hung up on is having to teach all of the curriculum/teach towards a test. I want to be able to teach some cool and important things about history and have students read and discuss lots of documents and books, but what if that means I am not teaching what I am "suppose to teach." I think it comes down to is finding a balance between everything. I need to know what my students need as learners, teach the curriculum, and be able to teach good history content. I am no expert in history, even though I may know a lot, and there are always more opportunities to learn. A good teacher always knows what their students need and can work with them to meet the content and curriculum while meeting their needs.
