I personally tend to only have two major food cravings, and they are polar opposites of each other. My cravings when it comes to sweets are sour snacks like sour gummy worms and things like that. Which, according to the information above, seems unusual because almost everyone in my family besides me craves chocolate. My mom absolutely loves chocolate, and my sister loves to bake so most things she bakes are chocolaty. My other food craving is red meat. I absolutely love a big, hearty ribeye or tenderloin. I could eat a steak 5 times a week and not get tired of it. This craving doesn't really surprise me from an epigenetic standpoint because my whole family is the same way all the way to my grandparents. I find this idea that epigenetics can pass down food cravings to be fascinating and it makes me wonder about alcoholism and other drug addictions. Could cravings for certain drugs be related to gut microbiome passed down? Another thing that I find fascinating is the effect that alcohol can have on the brain (in the long run). I have always known that alcohol is a depressant and will inhibit brain function in the immediate side effects, but I never knew that it could have long term effects on the proteins in your brain. The fact about the fermentation of carbohydrates due to a certain strain K. pneumonia I had heard of before. I actually had heard of it from the tv show Grey's Anatomy. I didn't know the exact cause of it though, so knowing it is caused by K. pneumonia I find very interesting.

Your personal craving for sour candy is fascinating to me. I do not crave sour and actually do not like it. I do however crave red meat, normally in the form of a burger. The idea of cravings is also interesting in regards to drugs and alcohol addiction. This could explain family’s heritage for this disease and other factors associated with addiction. It I funny you first heard of K. pneumonia on Grey’s Anatomy. Now that we all have a deeper understanding of gut microbiome, the next time we eat or drink that may be a thought to cross our minds!

Hey Nate, I find it very interesting that you crave red meat out of everything. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that they crave red meat. I think it is fascinating that you don’t crave chocolate since your whole family does and they baked chocolaty things a lot. I thought that since sweets are in someone’s environment (home) they would crave whatever is in their house the most but in your cause that is false. I also did not know about how alcohol can affect your brain in the long run. I think everyone should think twice before consuming alcohol because who knows what it could do to them in the future.

Hi Nate,
My cravings are very similar to yours. I also love salty snacks and sour candy. Also, both of my parents like sweets and I feel like my cravings are the complete opposite as well. This makes me think that our cravings aren't genetic because if they were I feel like I should crave some similar things as they would instead of the complete opposite. What you said about alcoholism and drug use is super interesting as well. If that works the same way as cravings we can tey and predict future dispositions to drug abuse/use and maybe prevent people from falling down that path. I really enjoyed reading your post!

Hi Nate! I find it so cool and interesting that you crave red meat! I have never really heard of anyone craving meat before. I usually just hear about craving chocolate, sour, or like salty snacks like chips. I guess the more I think about it I will sometimes crave red meat. Do you think it could have something to do with an iron deficiency? I liked how you said that alcohol could have long term effects on the proteins in your brain and inhibit brain function. I also thought it was hilarious that you heard about k pneumonia from Grey's Anatomy, I love that show!
