As someone with a really high metabolism, I practically eat anything I want to and eat a lot through the day. I try and stay on the heathier side but as a college student it can get hard when unhealthy foods are cheaper. I really love salty snacks and sour candy and those are usually my go to choices when making trips to the C store. I always have a couple of bags of chips in the pantry as well as some sour skittles or other sour candy.

I find it really interesting that our gut microbiome is inherited from our parents. I don’t really think that my cravings are the same as my parents though. They both love sweets and I don’t as much as they do. I am curious to know why I don’t crave the same foods as them if biologically we are supposed to be tied together in our cravings and environmentally being around them for so much of my life that I didn’t adopt their cravings either. This leads me to believe that what I eat and crave wont affect what my children crave either.

However, I do think that alcohol consumption is genetic and depending on the parent’s disposition to alcohol can influence the child’s likelihood of consuming alcohol. According to the Addiction Center, there are genes that are directly linked to alcohol abuse. So if your parent has these genes then you are also likely to be predisposed to alcohol abuse as well which is frightening.

First, congratulations on your metabolism and if you know where I can upgrade mine, hit a girl up. I think its interesting that you don't share any of your families cravings. I do not share any of my families and I believe that our brain may develop certain affinities for food through enjoyable and bad food experiences. I believe how we process these foods may be more genetically driven, but as far as preference and cravings, I would argue it is largely psychological rather than biological. With alcohol, genetics are undeniable involved in a major way. Being genetically predisposed to any addiction should be taken very seriously as to prevent incidence in you and your family members.

Hi Max!

I really enjoyed reading your forum post! I can agree with you that I sometimes do not crave all the same foods that my parents crave. My mom definitely craves many more salty foods than I do, although we crave the same amount of sweet foods. I think that alcohol consumption is genetic, as I have read about it in many of my psychology textbooks. I found it interesting that some of our other cravings were genetically based. I also think that your environment has lots to do with someone’s food choices. I know that at college, I have a harder time trying to eat healthy as I would at my house because the options in the caf are sometimes limited and many of the “unhealthy” foods are much more affordable. I think you did a wonderful job and I really enjoyed reading your post!

Hi Max. I found similar results about my parents and I have different cravings which lead me to believe cravings may be more related to our environmental surroundings and less likely our genetics. I agree that alcoholism looks like it is more genetic, I wonder why cravings are less genetic than alcoholism? I think its important to note the environment one grows up in plays a role in their drug and alcohol use. For example, if a child grows up seeing their parents drinking large amounts of alcohol would they be more inclined to drink because they were exposed to the alcohol at a young age, they were predisposed to crave alcohol or a combination of both?

Hey Max! I think it is cool that your cravings are for sour foods I do not usually hear a lot of people say they have those types of cravings. I also agree that I am curious why you do not have the same cravings as your parents because we do inherit our gut microbiomes from our parents. I do have a question though, do any of your parents have a high metabolism like you and do you also have any of their cravings towards regular food like meal wise? I also agree with you on how alcohol can affect your genes and how it can affect the genes of offspring. I think it is also frightening that a person could be predisposed to this addiction just because of their genes. I do think though that somewhere down the road there will be a way that scientist can help people with this problem.
