Hey Taylor! I think that the only reason a scientist would do something as controversial is that he was passionate about it. I agree that he and his team should be deemed responsible for whatever happens to the twins since he was not completely sure about the side effects of his experiment. We studied Henrietta Lacks in high school by reading her book and this situation is kind of similar. Both Jiankui and the researchers in the Henrietta Lacks study were doing studies that could potentially help a lot of people. However, in Henrietta's case, the researcher's motive included money as well and that never mixes well with trying to do good. It still is not known what Jiankui's true motive was, but hopefully, it was to stop the advancement of a horrible, currently incurable disease.
