Members in my family have suffered from chronic pain. My dad use to race dirt bikes professionally and now that he’s getting older, he has shown signs of being in more and more pain. His body has just been beat up and bruised a lot throughout his racing career, where it’s hard for him to get around like he use to without any pain and it’s mainly in his shoulder and knee (which he’s had both replaced). One of the biggest unhealthy way to deal with chronic pain is to turn to opioids or other types of pain killers. Peoples diets can also be another contributing factor. If your body isn’t getting the right nutrients, then it can’t recover and people may not feel any better. Another factor is stress, being in more stressful situations or having a job that puts a lot of unwanted stress on a person’s body can release more nociceptin causing more pain. Doctors have been doing research on neurostimulation therapy that works by changing pain signals when they are being sent to the brain. It helps with the pain management and I’ve talked about getting it before for my shoulder and think it could be something that’s useful. Two that’s basically free of cost that could help is meditation and mobility. Being in a better mindset relieves stress and allows you to be more mobile with proper breathing techniques that can be found on YouTube or going to yoga class. Pain killers can inhibit more sensation of pain when taken often. This being because for the time they’re “working” it numbing your body. However, once they start to wear off, it becomes more painful since you became accustomed to that “high” this is why people can become addicted to pain killers. Physiological factors play a big role in people’s pain in society. Often times people who are depressed or even just feeling down, tend to have more pain because of the stress that’s being put on their body. This can cause overt behavior and you can tell by someone’s actions how they are feeling by how they act or walk. They can let off cues showing their weakness and people in society tend to pick up.

Hey Palmar, I agree that an unhealthy way to cope with pain is to turn to opioids. I also learned that alcohol and nicotine are other unhealthy ways people will deal with pain. I did not think about how stress can affect chronic pain and make it worse so that is a good point especially for college kids who are under a lot of stress. I agree with what you said about how meditation can help reduce pain. Yoga and Tai chi can also help reduce pain and deep breathing is also another healthy way to cope with pain. These help people get into a mentally restful place.

Hi Palmer!
Your personal connection to chronic pain, seeing it though your dad, is an intriguing and up-close look at the effects of this problem on everyday life. It is an interesting concept to explore the way nutrition affects they way your body recovers or even senses pain in the first place. Neurostimulation therapy sounds like a more extensive, yet effective therapy that I am interested in learning more about. I do believe stress is a major contributor to pain sensations and extended periods of chronic pain. Overall, the topic of chronic pain is an interesting topic that I do not know that much about but look forward to learning more.

Hey Palmer! Just wanted today that my dad also raced and after so long of getting beaten and banged it didn't help as he got older. I also agree with you that opioids are not the best way to cope with chronic pain. But, also alcohol and nicotine are just as bad for you as opioids. Also, stress has a big factor on the body it can hurt the body in so many ways, physically and mentally, which does not help with chronic pain. Also, I think that neurostimulation therapy is pretty cool and how it changes the signals that are being sent back to the brain. I agree with you on the psychological factors I think they play a big role in pain perception and also think its cool that our minds can affect how much we perceive pain.
