If you know me well, you know this is pretty much my plan for after medical school, so I have put a lot of thought into this subject! I want to participate in a program like Doctors without Borders, or to be a Missionary Doctor. It is important to me to be able to supply the needs of people without the medical resources we have in the United States! Ideally, I would practice emergency/ family medicine to my patients. My favorite part of traveling, and the part I find the most important, is firsthand experiencing the culture. So, I would hope after supplying the needs of my patients, I would have the ability to sit down and discuss their perceptions of life and their life experiences in general! There is also a need in the U.S. to raise awareness to different cultures/ trials people face, so I would love to be able to video what I experience, as well as, interview my patients and illustrate their everyday lives.

Oh, it’s so hard to pick a top 10, but the first places that come to mind are: Greece, New Zealand, Africa, India, Spain, Australia, Hawaii, China, the Swiss Alps, and Thailand. This experiment would drastically change my life, because (although it is my dream to do this) it is a huge step out of my comfort zone. The most growth we experience comes from finding the courage to step out of our comfort zone! Most of my personal growth would come from hearing different perceptions of life and finding new understandings from different people about life. It would be eye opening to serve people through a unique experience like this experiment. If I could sign up for this experiment today I would 100% do it!!

Hey Carol, it is so cool that you have this already planned for after medical school. I think you deserve it after that many years in school! I also love the idea to video what you experience and interview patients and illustrate their everyday lives. I think that would be very fascinating. I also had some of your cities on my top ten list but of course there are so many more cities that we all would love to visit and I hope we all can visit the cities that we want to visit. I am also interested in different cultures around the world, I think it is very interesting to see how other people live and interact.

Hey Carol! I absolutely love that this is your real life goal. Mission work is my first love, so your forum post is one of my favorites. I also love how you mentioned not only helping people in need medically but also taking the time to get to know more about them and their culture because that;s something I would love to do as well. I definitely think doing the kind of work that Doctors Without Borders do is your calling and you have the perfect personality and heart for it! Like you said, the most growth comes from stepping out of your comfort zone so I think it’s a goal you should definitely shoot for and I have 100% confidence in you!

Hi Carol! I loved your post. If you end up videoing your experiences with people across the world and want to share, I would definitely watch those videos. I really love your list of places to visit as well. New Zealand is so beautiful, and Thailand sounds fascinating. I also love that you want to serve others in need as a doctor--you will be amazing at that! Family/emergency medicine is also a great specialty to go into if you want to work overseas in a clinic with fewer resources. And there are a lot of short-term placements for people with those skill sets, so you could totally travel the world!
