The topic of slasher movies are once that have genuinely interested me and terrified me. The reoccurring theme I have written in my blog posts is that realistic horror movies scare me more than anything. Serial killers are a very real thing and seeing them be personified by a large man in a mask is very scary. Believe it or not, but there are real people in this world that are even worse than a Michael Myers like Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy. I’m sure all of the very popular “slashers” from the movies are based on real life murdering psychopaths. The fact that there are actual people in this world that can be that terribly evil is baffling to me. In the films we see a more super human version of serial killers though, like in the Halloween movies Michael Myers seems to have almost super human strength and simply cannot die. Throughout the Halloween films I have seen Michael Myers be shot, have his head knocked clean off his body, and burnt to a crisp but he seems to keep coming back. All of those movies are great, but I wish there was an explanation for these super human abilities. In Halloween (1978) it clearly shows that Michael was a human but he cannot die? This doesn’t make sense to me, but I’ll drop it and get into a thoughts of the films we were required to watch for this section.

We had to watch Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018), and Sleepaway Camp (1983). I have always loved the Halloween films so I had already seen both of these films multiple times before. To me these films really show how messed up psychopaths with an urge to kill are. Michael Myers did not have human emotions though, and seemed to live his life based on instinct. His instinct was to kill though not to survive. To see the series of movie have fantastic end in the 2018 film was very satisfying. To see Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie finally kill Michael was absolutely amazing. This was a perfect way to end the series and hopefully Michael Myers does not come back to life like he has many times before. I have a feeling this will not be the last time we will see Michael Myers on the big screen though.

Now let me get to honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen, Sleepaway Camp. The acting was terrible, the story was bland, and the ending was very predictable. The whole premise of the film was to find out who the murderer was at the camp. Right after the head cook brought Angela back into the walk in pantry, and then was murdered right after that, I knew it was Angela who was the killer. It was so obvious the whole movie that it was her. Every time someone did her wrong they ended up dead. I did however not think that she would actually turn out to be a he, this caught me off guard. The only thing that twist at the end did was add to the amount of male slashers there are in film. But since these slashers are based off of real serial killers then it makes sense for them all to be men because statistically there are many more male serial killers than women. I would not suggest this film to anyone I know, unless I wanted to trick them into wasting an hour and a half of their life. It is safe to say that I thoroughly disliked this film.

It's weird how to me slasher films don’t scare me as much because they reflect reality. To me, movies about things we don’t understand or can't explain are scarier because honestly if a slasher shows up at my house, I have a good idea of what’s to come. I agree that Michael is hard to understand in the sense that he's human yet can take 7 shots to the chest and walk it off.

I have to disagree about sleep away camp. It's not an objectively good film, but it really shows how weird and wacky the slasher genre can be. It has extremely fun line delivery, and the kid actors really act like kids do at summer camps. It also shows how wacky the kills can be in slashers. Over all I'd say it a top of the slasher genre, and a film I would show people if they wanted to see how weird slashers can be.

I agree! I remember when I saw Halloween in theaters and I thought it was a really good end to the saga. I just worry that they will revive him in a cheesy way. I also like how he does not really convey any emotions because it makes the killings more black and white and there is not really any room for that "gray" argument.
