I thought Copland brought up an interesting point when he mentioned that most music, without lyrics, is commonly interpreted to have no meaning. That is, we associate "meaning" to the level of our relation to the song, and our relation is commonly defined by lyrics and how closely those lyrics apply to us. But, what we fail to recognize is that each melody, harmony, and rhythm has its own meaning. A song should be designed in a way that provokes emotion and feeling--thus, "meaning"--regardless of whether we can put that meaning into comprehensible words.
