"How We Listen"

I really liked the end of the article, specifically the quote: "What the reader should strive for, then, is a more active kind of listening. Whether you listen to Mozart or Duke Ellington, you can deepen your understanding of music only by being a more conscious and aware listener—not someone who is just listening, but someone who is listening for something" (Copland 3). I would have to agree with this statement. When we listen to music we should be actively thinking about what we can get out of the song we are listening to-for example maybe that is a story or a deeper meaning. Another quote I noticed that really interested me was that "themes or pieces need not only express one emotion, of course" (Copland 2). This is something we should keep in mind when listening to and thinking about music. Pieces can be very complex and involve many different themes and emotions. Reading this article made me think about the question: How consciously do we really think about the music we listen to?
