Copeland explains the different ways we interpret and understand music in his piece "How We listen." Early in the article he divides up the different ways we can listen to music into three planes. These are sensuous, expressive, and musical. When I first came across this I was hesitant because it seemed like a bold generalization being that music is so complexed and hard to define, but as I continued reading it fell into place extremely well. I found myself reflecting and realizing that subconsciously I was doing many of these things when I listened to music, and also learned some things that I should probably start paying more attention to when listening.
