Photography greatly impacted our historical events with the use of still images. Still images were able to freeze exactly what was going on at the particular time in history. The civil rights movement was a major event in American history that might not have been responded to as quickly if there were no photographs documenting the gruesome scenes of police brutality and segregation. Photographs captured the innumerable violent beatings and killings of innocent black individuals. As well as police officers letting dogs loose on black individuals and spraying forceful water hoses on them in Birmingham. Showing the rest of American and the world the horrendous crimes that were taking place forced America to change and to be held accountable for their actions. The Vietnam war was another example of revealing the truth of what was actually taking place. With no censorship from the government officials, photographers were able to capture the Buddhist monks setting fire to themselves. It was a peaceful protest, showing the actions they were willing to take, to change the consistent discrimination Vietnamese individuals were facing. Documenting this allowed the world to see the desperate actions taken by the hundreds of Buddhist monks and nuns. Photos of concentration camps during World war II and the Holocaust also publicized the millions of individuals who were tortured and murdered. These photos allowed the world to see these mass murders and no one being accounted for them. Without the world seeing the images, the government would have not been held accountable and the millions of deaths of individuals would have been covered up. Photography has helped show the truth of several historical events and you can see photography impacting events now in the same way. With the recent murder of George Floyd being documented on camera, it has globally showcased the continuation of police brutality in America. Darnella Frazier videotaping the gruesome event, allowed the video to go viral and allowed the whole world to see the horrendous murder of an unarmed, handcuffed black man by police officers. Without photos or video evidence, events like could have been covered up and the responsible officers would have not been held accountable like the murder of Breonna Taylor. I believe this video was essential in proving the detrimental force that police officer use on black individuals daily in America. The documentation of George Floyd's death has evoked substantial protests and advocating against racially motivated violence. It takes individuals with courage and strength to document such an event, not knowing if the officers involved could have attacked them next. Due to Frazier’s bravery of taping the horrendous homicide, we can hope that police will now be held accountable for their crimes and that America can cease all issues surrounding racial injustice.
