Dancing in the Rain
Just another rainy afternoon sitting by the window
Watching the cotton skies turn grey with anger
Warning from the news and words of caution washed
And joined by the white noise of a common household
The front door slings open with excitement and adventure
But is stopped suddenly by the wise words of a mother
— “Diana! Don’t forget your raincoat.”
The earthly scent of rain floods its way into the house
serving as mother nature’s warning of a storm to come
sending shivers down a young short spine
Swiftly pink Barbie rain boots are slipped over soft socks
and a yellow raincoat is thrown on like a hero cape
Which seemed to have brought life to the dull environment around
The stiff rain gear protecting from the attacking drops
the rain falls on the only skin it can reach
and are like tears running down the cheek
wet, warm, and somewhat comforting.
Dancing and Prancing as the earth turn gloom
Clouds huddle to begin their task
Toes kicking every puddle in sight
as if at the best waterpark in the south.
drenching the socks deep down in the rain boats
Arms cutting through the wind like butter
as if a bird soaring the sky taking each breeze as it comes
The sky then starts to belch
and touches the ground with streamers light
Excitement fades out of the body
And fear begins to replace it
Tall trees bend as if made of taffy
The light of earth is covered with dark curtains
Discomfort grows as the storms being its tantrum
Once a wet paradise is now a drenched nightmare
worried parents calling come from the door to seek shelter
running against the harsh wind towards the house
the door prepared to put up a fight to close.
leaving the wet clothes at the front and slightly shivering
The day’s adventure shifts into the warm embrace of home
