Rama is a character who I find quite confusing. In the introduction, we read about how Rama is the "ideal" of a perfect man following his dharma (pg. 2). I don't know that I completely see this. The one major point in this story is when his father banishes him to the woods at his step-mothers request (pg. 110-122). This story made no sense because it seems like both Rama and his father gave into the wishes of the wet nurse. This whole plan wasn't even his step-mothers idea, but after the time with the wet nurse, this became her plan. I don't get why Rama just gave into this so quickly. Without this event, there wouldn't really be a need for the rest of the epic. However, the epic continues to confuse me because Sita and Laksmana will do anything to protect Rama. However, Rama doesn't seem to do the same for his wife and brother (pg. 230-233). Everyone in the woods seems to dislike Rama, which is why I don't get why he is this idealistic interpretation of dharma (pg. 215). I just find this all very interesting and very confusing. Rama's characterization throughout the epic isn't what I expected it to be since he is the ideal and the human embodiment of Vishnu.
