Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats technology (CRISPR-Cas9) has ushered in a new era of genetic engineering. Cas9 is a natural organism that can be used to edit the genome of humans, animals, and crops.  More study and research must determine what ethical issues could arise from this important discovery. “In order for CRISPR-Cas9 to be used safely in all areas and to solve potential issues, worldwide legislation should be prepared, taking into account the opinions of both life and social scientists, policy makers, and all other stakeholders of the sectors, and CRISPR-Cas9 applications should be implemented according to such legislations.”

The Promethean myth suggests that if humans try to play, nature will find away to penalize us. That myth is applied to the debates on genome editing. In the science community there are bioethicists who are for moving ahead with no controls over CRISPR/Cas9. Other bioethicists are arguing that we should not be using this gene editing technology. The thought is just because we can do something, does mean we should. Finally, there is the middle of the road. Some proponents of the CRISPR technology suggest we proceed slowly and continuously check ourselves along the way.

There are countless extinct species that once lived here on Earth. We cannot know what the ramifications would be of re-introducing an extinct species into any habitat. Consider also, there still has not been an extinct animal brought back yet. While the process of de-extinction is still being researched, it is paramount to be aware of the harm that may occur, when bringing any species into a habitat not its own and what that may result in. There are examples of this with species that are not extinct.
