As De-extinction begins to receive attention at both the popular and scientific level, scientists have had altercations about the subject.  Speaking about the potential and pitfalls de-extinction could have to the ecosystem and humanity. Also, about the technology applied to the subject in order to successfully bring a de-extinct animal back.

De-extinction has mainly been focusing on the technical challenges of resurrecting extinct species, the problem of selecting which species to revive, and the danger that de-extinction could divert attention and resources away from badly needed programs to prevent further extinctions. It distracts them from the central risk which is the ecological effects that could be large, and hard to predict and manage.

Advocates of de-extinction have suggested several ethical considerations in favor of pursuing it. The ethical evaluation involves determining whether deep de-extinction would promote or undermine significant values and whether it would conform to or violate operative norms and principles.  That it is a matter of justice, that it would reestablish lost value, that it would create new value, and that we need it as a conservation last resort.
