I really enjoyed reading this piece by Larry Fink. His example of p. 26 of how a small corner can influence the overall composition and feel of a photo was when I started to get really engaged. I think he makes excellent points about mistakes and Art as a whole. For example, I had a tendency when I was in high school to try to get a perfect perspective on something and to crop anything that made it less than perfect. The focus on energy and not worrying about "constipated intellectuality" was something I had a similar experience learning. His emphasis on the importance "between here and there" also helped me understand the nuances of composition. Furthermore, I appreciated how he noted that perspective and perception could drastically change a photo's meaning. More specifically, I was compelled by how he encourages putting empathy, not to be confused with sympathy, to the front of the photo. This is particularly challenging since the camera is ultimately just a machine, but it makes it interesting to reach this impossible goal of feeling through a photograph. The idea of sensing the atmosphere or space of a picture in a way that boosts the overall image or grabbing a nanosecond of chance to take the "act of selection" has given me a much greater understanding and appreciation of photography.
