In re-watching the Crash Course video, my experience was vastly different compared to the beginning of the semester when we first began to study the Ramayana. While I still think the video does a decent job in terms of getting the basics laid out about the text, it is now abundantly clear that it does no justice to the vast and complex religious traditions of the text. The Ramayana is not understood as one distinct thing, a large part of its character comes from the fact that many different groups of people understand it in very different ways. This video tends to constrain the text into one distinct path, which defeats the purpose of different interpretations. The glossing over in this video is extreme, but I understand that a deep, comprehensive study of the text is not the purpose of the video at all.
I agree with you. For people like us at the beginning of the semester, it was a good video to introduce us to what the Ramayana is. However, it is still a 10 minute video summarizing hundreds of years, it can only capture so much.
